I have'nt tried Flashing on Linux, but i'm using FreeBSD (More advance than Linux)... It also has the all the Linux specs plus more!
You cannot just use some Cellphone softwares in it, unless you are using VMWare (Virtual Machine Loader) - It can load Windows XP/Me/98 or even other Linux systems as if it was just an application!!!
And it can do Vice-versa with other Operating system...
To know more about VMWare try this site http://www.vmware.com/
But it will cost you $300 or even $6050(4-PC setup) for the VMWare Linux package...
OpenBSD/FreeBSD/NetBSD already has a Virtual Machine loader built-in, that's why i'm using it!!!
(But configuring/reprogramming it, is quiet difficult for a Unix newbie)

VMWare is cool, but i don't think it will work to flash via it.
I tried to install it and setup the LPT ports, but never got contact with phone.
I ran VMWare within windows XP.
