Hello :)
This is a question for engineers and hardware guys... not much to do with flashing!
As the 6610, 7210 and 7250 are members of the same "family".... is it possible to put the memory chips of the 7250 (5 MEGAbyte) into a 6610 or 7210??? Because those have only 750 KILObytes.... very low when you want to save pictures, JAVA stuff etc. I can get those chips here. And having a 6610, i would like to take the challenge, but i don't want to destroy it! IF this should be possible, does the phone then require a re-flash? Or even a software-mod?? Actually, i think so, as the original software supports only 0.75 MB. Or can it be flashed with software from the 7250??? Despite having no camera??
Anyone did this sort of mod before? Experience? Please reply :) Thanks a lot.....
Regards.. Thanh

As long as you use the same ROM-series as 7210, then it shouldn't be a problem.
But as you say, you will have to do some modding in the firmware to make the phone be able to use the rest of the memory.
As we all know, the DCT-4 haven't been hacked (or available to the general public) yet, so I'm afraid you may have to wait till a decrypter of DCT-4 is available.
But I was onto the same thought as you are now a couple of months ago, but I never tried to replace the ROM due to the problem stated above.
But if you have access to good equipment or know someone who does, you could try to replace the ROM and flash it with the 7210 software and see what happens. As long as you have proper equipment, it shouldn't be much of a risk for you.

Thank you for the advice :) I am not a software guy, have yet to flash my first phone... but i am good at soldering :) Well, i guess i will wait with that experiment untill someone found out about the structure of the dct-4 then... i guess that then there will be a demand for this tuype of mod as there are a lot of 750 kb phones out there, and the 5 MB chips aren't even that expensive.... It would just interest me to find out what happened when i change the chip and then put the software of a 7250 in it... 'coz it's got no camera. Will it still work? hmmmm maybe i'll wait till i have a chance to get another one to experiment with :)

I probably wouldn't bet on the 7250 firmware, but if you feel confident in your soldering skills, why not open your phone and check if the IC in 7210 is the same series as the one in the 7250. It probably wouldn't hurt your phone at least and you may even be lucky!

Nice Info...
Anyone knows that if you upgrade a 7210/6610 with the firmware of 7250 what happens??
Does it hangs when any camera function is activated or it hangs at the start when it searches for a camera device?
If the memory is still 750kb will the phone still work in 7250's firmware?
7250's firmware is the best in the league and I think upgradation of 7210's firmware to 7250 will interest many people (with a added advantage of extra memory).

I seriously doubt that the 7210 will work with the 7250 firmware, but as I said earlier, you can try to replace the firmware IC with a new IC of the same series with more space.
It won't hurt the phone as long as the physical specifications are the same.
My guess though is that we have to wait for a while since the 7210 is relatively new and no one really wants to experiment with their phone too much before they buy a new one.
At least I'm not willing to do anything to mine yet :(

Ya, same here. "Don't fix it if it ain't broken". The 7210 is just 4 months old and anybody will surely not want to mess with a perfectly working phone of his. But people at NokiaFree also include engineers and working mobile professionals who can seriously delve into this topic to find something of real interest.

Yes, same for me... i got my 6610 just three weeks now and don't want to do anything with it which could eventually harm it. But should i get a second one, i will take it on. I would not even have had the idea if i could not direct compete a 7250 with mine 6610 (my boyfriend got the 7250), and they look pretty the same under the covers except the camera. I would not wonder if the 6610 could even take the camera, too :) Just a gess, but the main PCB should be pretty much the same except the memory and the actual camera. Why do i think so? Because of a similar thing in 6500/6510/8310. Three "totally different" phones yet same PCB. The 6500 and the 8310 even same display, but 6500 with active flip (that is a very rare phone!) and the 6510 just a different LCD. Both 6510 and 8310 even got the hardware (here contact pins) for the active flip switch of the 6500's cover (i had one of those... check http://members.fortunecity.com/thanhbkk/bkkboys/mobile.html , my phone page) and i think, Nokia saves money where they can by releasing some series of phones based on standard components. The car industry does the same... VW Golf IV, Audi A4 and Skoda Octavia are actually the same car! Same platform.... just different "express on" covers
:) As soon as i have time, i will take both the 6610 and the 7250 apart (if my BF let me!) and check this out, but i guess i won't be surprised... it should be almost the same PCB.:D

A new version of 6610 aka 6620 with camera is soon going to be available in the market.
I respect your feelings Thanh but I think 7250 is a very sexy looking phone, much better than 7210. It's the best looker of the lot. They don't look similar if you hold both phones in your hands. The colors are different, the keypad is different.

Yup yup, i know... having both a 6610 and a 7250 in my "family" :) The 7250 is a masterpiece of design, actually the best looking Nokia i know of (Original!) but UNDER the covers, they look soooo similar. I mean, if you take off the xpress-on shells, the actual phone, it is not much different. The front of 6610/7250 is so same as one egg to another except the buttons are slightly different placed. In fact, the upper covers are interchangeable between the two, but not all buttons will work. And one advance of the 6610 is it's 4-way scroll key... This the 7250 got too much from the 7210, the "left" and "right" keys suck. I did not test yet, if the upper covers from 7210 and 7250 are interchangeable... are they? Do all keys work? Oh i can't wait for the copycats to bring some 7250 style covers with those beautyfull colours to fit on the 6610 with all buttons working. Nokia left the poor 6610 completely out here, having original covers for it only in colours like...... cardboard? And too smooth! When use the phone for a little while, say, a ten-minutes-call, the hands start sweating and the phone may slip. I use a copycat cover in blue transparent which is better to grip, it's surface just "feels" better and the cover even fits better on the phon than the original!
