Hi, I want to make changes to the firmware of my 3310, and have some questions:

- What processor is in the phone?

- Is it possible to hook custom submenus and functions into the current nokia system? Is there still space for things in the ROM?

- What do I need to flash? I've heard things about a 'flasher cable', and looked at the schematics.. it hooks to the same pins as the F/M bus cable (under the battery), what is the difference?

- Do I need to open the phone/replace chips?

Thanks in advance!

Okay, careful searching already got me answers to the first two questions (ARM, yes this is possible), but the question about opening the phone still remains.

So, flashing can be done through a Parallel Port cable, but, I also read somewhere you have to open the phone and use a eeprom programmer (!) to patch a checksom/security code. Is this really needed?

I think you've done a bit too much research! Things are always more simple then you think! You can build your own flash cable or you can buy one! They are quite cheap and you do NOT need to modify the phone or anything drastic! Just flash new software with new cable! Get hold of a flash cable and use my guide to unlocking and flashing which is in the FAQ section of "Nokia General Discussion)!;)

@chunkhead

I changed the file name of your guides to title_here-chunkhead. Hope you don't mind :)

Yeh, great stuff that your searched but it is a lot simpler than you imagine. The Forum FAQ is @

(It has chunkheads two guides at the bottom :) )

Alternatively you can get a modified flash and edit that yourself, just to be unique!!

There are plenty to choose from. I am currently modifying a 3310 flash to have different jingles for each menu topic, although the success I am having is a little disappointing.I may start with a 3330 flash and take out the wap to make room for this mod or use a 3315 flash at the loss of a few functions, happy experimenting!!:)

Yeah, I do want to make an unique firmware :) I have the following changes in mind:
- Change all the menu graphics and animations
- Make it look up the Location Area Code in a table and display where it is
it will be fun.. hmm must first figure out how arm works :-)

Sounds good, but I believe that feature is already active in Nokias.

"Cell info display" does this for you. It displays the STD code for the area you are in.With your suggestion you will have to manually input various locations specific to your country.

Hex editor on download page is ideal for working on your animations, recommended!!

Personally, I think the best flash nokia have come up with was the rythmic keypad alert as in 3410.All Nokias should have this!!

That function does not work here in the Netherlands, maybe only with certain networks in certain countries? Or else the table would have to be extremely big...

Hmm just looked it up, the area name is sent with a so called 'cell broadcast', and my provider lacks this ... joy

The answer is simple..... Move to uk then you can use it :)

How is it going to work if you can t access the standard version?

Just curious......

Well I have a table that maps LACs to locations, it would look up the area code in that table and display the attached name.

This is different from cell information in that it is a lot less precise.. after all, cells have a much smaller granularity than LACs. Hmm, I could always move to the UK :D

Edit: another different thing, I suppose it would be possible to store SMSes in the phone with a patched firmware? The default 3310 does not have this feature, and my SIM only can store 7 ..
