View Full Version : Nokia 6610 Infrared transfer?

Kind of a silly and very noobish question here... I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Nokia 6610. Quite an upgrade from my old cheapie 3390, I should say!

My question is this. I know that the 6610 can transfer data via infrared using the PC Suite software. However, what sort of infrared device do I use on the computer end? Does the infrared on a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum cut the mustard, or do I need something else?

Sorry for the stupidity of the question. To be a noob is to ask dumb questions, so thanks for any helpful comments in advance.

Hello :)
If that IR thingy of your soundcard is installed as a "genuine IrDA" device, you can use it. Check in the control panel - device manager- if you got such an IrDA device installed. I think the IR on that soundcard (i have one of those in my office PC, but it doesn't work) is only to remote control the volume, sound etc, but it's not IrDA standard.
You need a cable either serial-IrDA or USB-IrDA to hook the phone with the computer. Be sure to install this device BEFORE Nokia's PC-Suite, otherwise you will run into trouble.
The best option is to use Nokia's DKU-5 data cable, which connects an USB port to the Pop-Port of your phone. This cable is hell expensive, and also needs to be installed BEFORE PC-Suite. It gives the best results, specially on Windoes XP (got sometimes trouble with IrDA devices, at least mine does).
Best regards....

Alright, thanks for the help. The Audigy's IR isn't in the device manager, so I suppose it's only for the remote control functions. That's rather stupid if you ask me, but hey, I'm not a creative engineer :P

I think I'm gonna have to go with an IrDA adapter right now then. The USB cable is just too darn expensive for me right now. Does anyone have any recommendations for a really good, inexpensive IrDA device?

Thanks again.
