I'm using xp and whenever I add the ".jar" bit to the end of a file name which is a zipped (compressed) folder, the icon stays the same and shows up as the same file type. How do I get it to show up as a .jar file in the properties?

Excuse my ignorance. I hate to sound like a complete noob, but where are the file settings for Windows Xp? I have only recently upgraded and completely different. I wouldn't mind, but I'm training to become an A+ technician, but we havn't covered Xp yet.

I have XP in Dutch but you might try this
In a NORMAL window like My Documents, goto EXTRA, then you see 4 options, select the one lowest one, then select the Second Tab, and unmark the 9th box there.
Hope this helps.

Click on start then click my computer then click on tools and go to folder options. then click on a tab View and then uncheck the box that says Hide file extensions for known file types. Click apply and OK. This should work. (BY DEFAULT WINDOWS HIDES THE EXTENSION OF THE FILE SO WHEN WERE CHANGING THE NAME IT WAS ONLY CHANGING THE NAME OF THE FILE NOT THE EXTENSIONS)
EXAMPLE :
IF YOU HAVE FILE CALLED APP.ZIP IN WINDOWS IT WILL DISPLAYED AS APP WITH SO IF YOU CHANGE THE NAME TO APP.JAR
ACTUALLY IT WILL BE CHANGE TO APP.JAR.ZIP THAT IS THE REASON YOU HAD SAME ICON.
Bye the way JAR is nothing but Zip file with just extension change and bit of information about the java classes in manifest file for the Java virtual machine
Hope this solves your problem
