Neverbe the person who works on the phone-network machines..

The only ones who can are polices officers. They restrict this command to all the others.
With a phone in st-by or in calling they can find a person with the probability of 5 meters round in the cities! Very impressive

It's not just the cops that can do this now. A website is offering the same service but you can't just ask for the location of any number, it's got to be registered and permission has to be given and stuff. Parents are meant to use it to keep track of their kids.

I believe he's referring to certain cell companies. I think they offer that in the US to buisness accounts.

They offer it here in Taiwan. If I buy/register about 20+ phones, they'll give me access to a website I can use to see where all the phones are.

Delivery companies here use it to dispatch crews. But, you must own the phone/GSM account. They won't let you do it for other people. Also, the particular IME and GSM number must be registered to allow for this. And, it's a monthly charge of about 3,500NT about $100 USD per account.

Well you can call up your CSP, usually they will tell you the network n state from where that person is calling...

hmm...couldd you dumb that down a bit. What's a CSP? Cell-service-provider?

I don't think they'd tell you much of anything, just tell you to make a police report.

Well i'm in India at the moment, n when i get un unrecognised number i call up my CSP (Cellular Service Provider), they tell me that provider of the number (CSP) n they tell me the state from where that number originated..

Sorry i don't know the url. It was on the national news about a week ago, maybe someone else saw it.

Actually, not even 9-1-1 Operators know the location (in real-time anyway). First they need a warrant, and then they go through a 3rd party. Even then, they can only tell you the location of the tower nearest the caller.

Actually out here, they have managed to track a guy who used a stolen cell phone to make calls.. The police were the ones ofcourse, and they probably had all kinds of permissions.. But it is possible..

Theoretically we should be able to extend minigps to do that.. You would have to build a common server site, where ppl have to upload their cell readings (and for different providers different cell stations ;-) ), build an app that allows you to send those readings (either through voluntary basis or through trojans <Oh!> and compare to find out an approximate distance..

There are a lot of fine points to be worked out.. But it will allow all of us to be a part of the Big Brother network ;-)
