View Full Version : What do you want in the next Commy?

Hello all,

Let's hear what everyone wants in the NEXT VERSION of their favorite commy. It could be any kind of enhancement or any other kind of addition. But keep your ideas sensible. We know how wild human imagination can run sometimes! (Note: List doesn't have to be based on priority of features.)

This is what I WOULD love in my next commy:

1. A brand new interface. And I don't want them to make it more complex and confusing. It should be more consistant across applications (e.g. in some apps in 9210 / 9210i, the Close button closes the currently opened file while in others, it simply closes the whole app even if there is an open file). More visual clues would be better. Icons are already fine. Adding alpha to them would be good (but not a necessity).

2. A better pixel fillrate! Yes, the 92xx can display some pretty graphics and colors but I seriously think it needs better pixel fillrate to display smoother video / animations and more complex graphics. Have you ever tried playing a Flash (SWF) file on the Communicator that has lots of fast moving objects? If yes, then you'll kow what I'm talking about here. Faster video speed will allow it to process more pixels in less time, thereby increasing the overall speed of the device. Also, font smoothing (in Windows language) or font anti-aliasing should also be implemented. The Communicator screen is a high contrast LCD and would benefit from font smoothing.

3. A better audio processor = a better output sampling rate. The current sampling rate is fine for most audio applications but isin't enough when listening to MP3s or audio files with a high sampling rate. Make it something like the N-Gage. It's sound output quality is quite good.

4. A stereo headset (with the option to connect a standard phono headphone). Has anyone seen the 5510 / N-Gage Nokia cable that converts the proprietary Nokia headset connector to phono? Something similar would be good. It would allow the Commy to also function as a standard music (MP3) player.

5. Connectivity using GPRS + Bluetooth. This is pretty much expected. This is something most people miss. The new Communicator should support the latest commuication protocols / technologies. After all, it's a Communicator, isin't it?

6. PC Link-up using USB / Ird / Bluetooth / Firewire. Everyone will agree that the serial port connectivity is a real pain.

7. Friendly SDK (Source Development Kit). Everyone knows that hardware means nothing if there is no good software on it (a classic example is the 11 years old Nintendo Gameboy. It competed and defeated every handheld that came after it and continued to do so for constant 7 years! Hardware was primitive but software was not.) A good SDK will encourage software developers to program lots of software within an easy and fast development cycle. I believe that the current 9200 Series SDK is fine enough and Nokia just simply needs to continue with the trend.

Wow ... that was a big wishlist, wasn't it? For now though, it is enough. Let's see what others have got to say.

Regards,

Kamran

I think the new commy should have a detachable phone with the memory card in it. In this way you can leave your commy’s PDA in your briefcase and still receive all you SMSes and Faxes. When you re-attach the two, you can read all mail, SMSes etc.

Are we going to see an illuminated keyboard? If the outside keys are silver PLEASE don't have LEDs be blue as it is currently! It is virtually impossible to see under certain lighting conditions.

Is any software available for the 9210 to enable SMS “report immediately” as in the 9110? The time and date of reception would also be great and NOT time sent. Maybe both time and date sent AND received could be done. What about SMS management?

Hope to hear from you soon!

A very good idea indeed from both of u.
I want to add a "wi-fi" capability, bigger internal RAM, could handling bigger MMC (>> 1G maybe)

@ki007

no 6. our commy has an irda. Logically, u can use it to link w/ pc-irda.
But I have not tried it yet.

I know what u want. It is very good idea. But right now, u has this option already. What about u buy another small phone (esp series 60)
which has gprs, bt, irda, better audio, better display, friendly sdk and foldable keyboard?

imho, just an idea also ...

Touchsensitive-screen would be nice, then you could finally edit pictures - but I don't want to let go of the keyboard, that's the reason why I bought my 9210i (which is currently in repair center because it couldn't handle -3C tempture, I want chance to that too. The absolute zerrow tempture should be enough to handle... =D)

Then it would be great if that GPRS connection could be used in the commu. I mean it could replace that DataCall thingy when using internet.

USB has to be on the next model, it has to be...

MUCH(!!!!!!!!!!!!!) better/faster CPU, 52MHz (or was it 54MHz) isn't enough. For example SonyEricson P900 has 156MHz in its CPU and Motorola A920 has 168Mhz(!). 9210i has 52MHz...
And much more Ram for use. 32megs should do the trick...

T9 would be nice... (although I never write messages from the front... =D )

Then the web-browser could support real Java applets, not that stupid MIDP thingy.

(Ok... Many people shall say "Buy a laptop!" but still... It would be nice to have these things in the next commu, maybe in future...)

BTW, Does someone know when it will be released or when some info of the next commu will be released? -I'd like to know...

Hope there will be good news at the 8th annual Nokia Mobile Internet Conference which will take place 29-30 October 2003 in Nice, France.

Yes Satira, I do have used the 9210 Irda and it works fine. I was just pointing out all the connectivity methods the next Commy should make use of.

And how about the outside screen for the phone? I surely don't want it to be a color screen (like the new Nokia mobiles) as it is very difficult to read them when the display goes on standby. It surely could be a high-res screen ( e.g. 128x128 ) and could also make use of greyscale shades (something like the inside PDA screen of the 9110).

And yeah, I agree with people who say that it needs a faster CPU.

I would also like to attach my wishes for new commy, hopefully 9310 :).

1) mpeg hardware decoding support would be great, or attachable to some slot.
2)CF slot or some like for devices like wifi, HDDs, ethernet....
3)65000 coulour display, love to emulate VGA, That's really important for me, and better ability to see the display in sunshine.
4)powerfull battery, the battery used now 1300 lion is good enough for cpu 54Mhz, but for 200Mhz CISC or something I wish to have in new commy would be for max. 1 day use.
I had build the 2400 mA battery pack for my 9210 and I love it : ).
5)more more more covers and cheaper, cause it's nightmare to buy the cover here, and cost about 300 euros.

6) OS WITH LESS BUGS - not found, insert pin, insert simcard, sometimes unability to press some keypads (yes, it's software problem) and many other bugs should be solved.

NOKIA, plase make the new commy the BEST of all!!!!!

Ok. Let it simple. All commy's users urge nokia extends the 7700 model into classic communicator model and name it 9230 or 9310 or 9xxx.

What do u think?
