I received a water-damaged 3330 today.

The d0oD tells me it was damaged in the water, i thought it was the typical story of dropping it in the loo, but then he tells me that he put his pants in the washing machine but didn't take the phone out... so his phone gets an intense 1 hour wash, c'mon i know some neat freaks out there but this is obsurd.

Anyway, he told me that after it came out of the was he dried the phone (how i don't know) and he turned it on, aparently it worked for a whole day then it wouldn't turn on/charge at all.

The next day, today, he gives me the phone, i place another battery in it, turn it on and it works, i find out it's a v4.50 with a pack C, i downloaded the full flash from the phone and saved it, the phone afterwards turns back off... won't turn on anymore...

I open up the phone and see rust or whatever that is all over, i gently clean what i can with a cotton swap and a little bit of alcohol, i place another fully charged battery in it turn it on and it seems to work again. 10 minutes later the fully charged battery is out of charge. I place yet another battery in it, this time it won't even turn on at all, or charge...

... bla bla bla... bla bla bla...

The phone will turn on sometimes, sometimes it will accept charge, sometimes it won't, it will discharge batteries in a flash (i'm all out of fully charged batteries now), what can i do to salvage the phone? Everything works fine, antena indicator at max all the time, battery indicator 'seems' ok, it will receive calls when i can turn it on, sms and all that works ok.

If anybody could help I would be greately appreciated.

Why don't you see if anything in the charging mechanism has been short-circuited?

That part where you plug in the charger? If so I've tried changing that, I took the one out of my 3310 and put it in the damaged 3330, same thing happens, battery seems to drain...

Actually, after some fiddling what happens now is the phone turns on every time, I just need to press the power button on very hard, however the battery indicator shows that there is a flat battery, and turns off the phone (how it normally happens when the battery runs out) but then I put the same battery in my 3310 and the indicator shows that it's fully charged. I'm using all original Nokia BMC-3 batteries 3.6v.

This is driving me bananas...

There has to be a fault somewhere, it's wherabouts are what puzzle me, I'm not much of a technician, however I've started a Digital Electronics coarse just a week ago (study at home one)

I would REALLY apreciate a solution for this :)

i would reflow the whole board, starting with the CCONT,COBBA,and HAGAR, then move on to the PA and the antenna switch for good mearsure. the ccont is most likly the problem though:)

Whoah there... what are each one of those?
Is there a photo somewhere where I may see all that pointed out or something?

What do you mean by reflow?

Below are some links i hope will help

Phone boards (http://www.inside-gsm.com/Nokia/Nokia_3310/Inside_Nokia_3310/Component_side_description_Nok/component_side_description_nok.html)

This link will show you board scans and where each part is.

To reflow menas to heat the solder on Ics etc to melting point then allow them to cool again, insuring that all connecting pins are soldered corectly. This will requier a hot air station and a few other tools.

When starting to learn to reflow boards you should first practice on old phones first, because if the heat is to high you can damage the Ic chips and lift the tracks of the board. Have a look at the link below go to the trouble shooting section, this will show you how to use hotair for BGAs-solder balls for rework.

Hot air (http://www.mobile-tech.net/)

Good luck with all this and good luck with your course.
