Hi. I've bought a 3310 phone some months ago and I've noticed a strange thing happening: it seems to only send about 70chars SMS. After searching in this forum, I found this thread about a veeeery similar problem
http://nokiafree.org/forums/t45614/h&highlight=unicode/s.html
and my phone really breaks every sms on lots of 70-character-sms. It's strange because I am in Brazil and the phone was manufactured here, and we dont use unicode, but I believe If I upgrade my firmware the problem may be resolved. But I dont know what cable to buy. There is an "all-in-one" cable? In what PC port should I connect it? And what program should I use to do that? My present firmware version is 5.79 11-11-02.

Tks in advance,

Nattie.

Hi,

Yes, indeed, Ur phone is default set to use the Unicode character set.

The strange thing is with that version, U cannot manually set it to 7bits gsm char set.

I think this is a serious weakness (deliberate bug) in the firmware while it is affecting Ur costs unnecessarily.

In version 607 Nokia reintroduced that phone option again.

As seen the date of Ur phone, I think Nokia should have that reflashed to a newer version for free for U.

Out here in Holland, I think it is done as sort of service that way.

If U decide to update Urself, U gonna need both sort of cables that exist.

The flasher cable for inserting the new firmware data, and a data cable for the required faid setting, to validate the new firmware working afterwards.

Good Luck

The problem is that Nokia Brasil says it cannot be done in a single day, and I cant stay without my phone. Besides, I know its not so difficult for them to flash a new firmware and I dont like the idea of being at least 2 business days whithout my phone for something that could be done in 2 hours, if so.

You said something I'd agree: its probably not an accidental change as the operator who sold it to me earns 2 times more for each SMS I send. Great.

Ive never seen the flasher cable selling here in Brazil, Its the only way to fix/upgrade it?

I've read somewhere that the flasher cable is not necessary to upgrade 3310 to 3315, the serial one can be used for doing that, is it true? If so, where can I find a tutorial on doing that?

Hi,

>> not necessary to upgrade 3310 to 3315

Yes, but keep in mind it ain't not upgrading, only tuning.

U can set some bit flags to acticate the 'hidden' options as the bitmap editor or the auto keylock functions.

U need a version 559 or higher for this, while earlier not had those hidden options yet.

But, this does not take away Ur sms problem!

Upgrading is putting a complete new firmware in it, can only be done by flasher cable.

U can make such a cable Urself, schemes are quite simple in my opinion.

I see, and can I change the Operator Logo also?

It's 5.79 :)

Can I fix this unicode option without upgrading?

I've found a flasher kit for all-nokia-phones, but it VERY expensive. :P
As I'm not planning to charge people for upgrading their phones, I wouldn't buy it. :-/

I dont know anything on electronic components, I have two cable schemes but they make less sense then Kanji to me. :P

If you know any sort of "Basic electronics for very very dummies" guide on the web, please send me the URL. But I'd prefer buying the cable, sounds safer than making my own cable. :P

Tks a lot!

Hi,

>> Can I fix this unicode option without upgrading?

Not use the new sms option, but use an already stored 7bits sms which U edit and then send.

U can not edit the opr logo with the inphones editor.

Hardware is more simple as Lego.

1 chippie, 2 resistors and 2 other things, total costs was some €5,-

Ask the guys in shop to bend all the + poles.

Use the phone plug from Ur data cable, connect with din5 or psx connectors.

Believe me, It also was my first big electronics experiment.
