About using Oxygen

I've brought a data cable for my 3510i and I start using oxygen 2.1 that works fine for me (I uploaded some java games and midis and saved all my messages). But i've read that oxygen can "kill" my mobile... Is it true? or it is only on "bad-cracked" versions? What alternative I have for uploading/downloading files? Any FREE alternative?
