To all you coders and cellphone-experts there:
Would it be possible to somehow integrate i.e. CellTrack and a map app.? It would be very useful, and I wonder why the operators/manufacturers haven't done this yet.. is it possible to determine the location of the cell where the phone is located on map? It would take HUGE amounts of manual work if ones had to do a database of the cells and their coordinates, and even this wouldn't be possible if the cellID's geographical places aren't provided by a operator. I don' t know if I made myself clear...

you know wat i was thinking the exact same thing, ive got psilocks minigps, it would be wicked if you had a map that corrosponds to the cell and area id
i already do this with my 7650 ;)
dont ask me to do it to you, I'm in greece and i use it only for the city I live

I've got some programming skills myself and I didn't mean that somebody would do it for me. I know there are some people here that only want someone to crack the programs they want to use or send them some cracked serials. If you could explain me the basics, so maybe I could apply this in my case. BTW: I live in Finland, I'm coming to Athens this spring... :)
first of all, decide which area you want to use for minigps(city, ountry area)
2. split the city into areas
3. create groups using the areas of interest(home, work, north city etc..)
then try to use the groups for changing images etc.
if you can continue this project post here

Thanks for the info. I wrote a long reply but then IE crashed and I lost it. I'll post a shorter version of my idea:
There would be a program that would be quite simple and could use for example CellID read from CellTrack (I don't know how difficult it is to do the reading of the ID from the phone..).
The program would read the CellID of the cell where the phone is in. The user would load maps to his phone. He would mark a spot on the map and assign a CellID to it, and the program would create a database with the CellID, map name and the spot on the map. Then when the program would get a new CellID it would compare it with the database and then show the right map and the marked spot on the map.
This would work best in cities where the cells are quite small.
The databases and the maps would be shared with other users, so they wouldn't have to do the storing of the cells and marking the spots in every city.
I found a service that uses the same basic idea but doesn't use maps: http://www.cellspotting.com. Please comment my idea...

The service displays the location of the fone in question, accurate to within a specified distance depending on whether in an urban area or in countryside, as long as the fone owner has granted permission to be located.
Courier firms can for instance log onto the site and see to within a few hundred metres where their drivers are for sure, where a fone call might get a different answer.
Same applies to your children, girlfriends etc. ;)

Does anybody know if the locations and measures of the base stations and their cells are public information, or can the operators keep them secret? I think my programming skills are insufficient for this program, but if somebody would get interested and could continue..?
I'll be travelling til' Sunday, so I won't be responding.

yea i would like to know if it is public information, i know the police can track suspects via the mobile fone so i think they must have the cell info as a mobile fone send the cell info the the network provider

i had this idea in mind too the moment i installed miniGps on my 6600 7 months passed. i commute 40 kms everyday to and from work where i pass by something like 183 cells in 6 different area codes. i've googled about this and found topics on cell site hunting... net monitor... etc. it would really be great to have an app that links these cell sites and area codes collected by miniGps to a map.
i have the same problem, i have lot of cells, i try to export them
there are also new apps, which may help u
