hi every1,

i know someone who is selling chipped broadband, apparently this is how it works:

the guy buys a digital modem from a shop for around 30 to 50 pounds, then he chips that modem and he's charging about 175 pounds for it. after you've bought off him, you replace your modem with the chipped modem and that will give you upto 1MB bandwidth. Maximum bandwidth

But i actually though that NTL change the bandwidth speed from their call center. once i rang them up to ask them to reduce the speed from 600 kb to 150 kb which obviously reduce's the price from 24.99 to 17.99 pounds.

There's just one thing i want know!! how the heck does he chip the broadband??

anybody got an inside view????? cheers

I was under the illusion that NTL offered 2M connection over its network, the cable modems regulate the speed of the connection, so chipping them (theoretically) would work... and that was why you only "leased" the cable modem from NTL.

I knew a guy who converted his 512k (before they upped the speed to 600k) to a meg, but can't remember how he sed he did it. He sed he had a phone call within 10 minutes from NTL asking him to reverse the process or get banned for life. He didn't fancy the ban, so went back to 512k. He knew his stuff, so im pretty sure he's not making it up, but you never know. Anyway, i thought you could have you connection remotely upgraded (or downgraded), so unless they can modify the modem remotely, it would suggest its somthing on NTL's side. I'm not an NTL customer, so i could be wrong.

The modem simply downloads a config file from the net - so it's "just" a case of telling the modem which file to download (ie unregistered/150/600/1M for NTL). Obviously it's not as simple as uploading your own files - and seeing as NTL monitor the bandwidth used for their "1 gig/day" cap, I'm sure hackers will soon be caught. It's been hacked though.

is a good place if you want to know more about how it all works. Lots of interesting stuff stored in the cable modem's "net monitor" :)

BTW, your cable modem can be found at 192.168.100.1 (use browser), but it's password protected (for obvious reasons)

my modems was username=root
password=root
easy to get into but as above nothing that can be done only clear the error logs,reset modem todefault,and change password(thought i,d better not do that last1...lol)

I thought you could easily clone a broadband modem, especially for Telewest or NTL, thought it had been around for a while??? plenty of cable hacking forums around :)
