Why would you? It might cost more to send via GPRS rather than GSM.
What's wrong with GSM anyway? I think its faster ...

no it will be cheaper over gprs coz the size of a text message is very small. and he might also have free gprs

I tried sending sms over gprs but couldn't do it.
I had found some software for doing the same but didn't work. But u can write text in an mms and send it to other mms enabled phones.I am using nokia 3650 on Orange.

ya i doubt it'll work. the recipient needs mms active by default or else he'll get a regular message with the url to collect the mms from... so i doubt a software would work either... unless it converts the outgoing mms into txt format!....

hehe, well if ur on a 6600 then ur lucky! (dunno about other phones)
Messages - options - settings - text messages - connection: change GSM to GPRS
might not be totaly correct names since i had to translate
still dunno if it works, or if it will be cheaper, or if it will be FREE if u have free gprs... kinda sounds too good to be tru.... totaly free sms 0_o
its build-in so no app needed

Theoretically, it's possible to send sms via GPRS as GPRS is just a connection from your phone to the APN. It would be definitely cheaper (depending on which country and what's the rate for GPRS for your service provider). Take a service provider is charging $0.005cents for 1kb of GPRS and sms of 160 characters is lesser than 1kb, so technically u'll be charged at $0.005cents per sms sent. However, most service providers knew that users would utilise this as most phones can change the settings for sms to be sent via GPRS and that is why they disable receiving sms on a GPRS network. That's why sometimes when u tried sending sms via gprs, u'll get an error that ur message fails to be sent. In addition, they might allow you to utilise sms sending via GPRS but still charged u at normal sms (via GSM) rates. I have tried sending sms via GPRS on one of the service providers in Singapore (M1 to be precised) and it does work (though i can't be bothered to check my bill on whether i'm being charged for normal sms or for GPRS).

I believe what Amarflora meant by sending text messages over GPRS is sending sms over GPRS. If he uses sms over GPRS, recipient doesn't need to activate mms on his services.
In addition, u can just typed out text and send out as an MMS over GPRS (w/o attaching pictures/vides and sound) but u'll be charged at MMS rates which is kinda wasted.
Btw, MMS is basically a messaging service which allows attaching text, pictures/vides and/or Sound.

Cheers...no worries at all....btw, not too sure abt the club nokia...the ones in singapore are basically nokia service centres....never tried sending it for repair but i've send my 3650 for flashing before...was told that they will do it over 3 hours...but since i came into the service centre abt an 1 hour to the centre being closed for a day...i was told to come back to collect the next day....

I have already tried it. But Orange network does not support it. when ever w send a mms with only text in it to a person who has not activated gprs, the recepient gets a link on his cell which he has to visit on a pc to see the mms, be it with videos/pics sound or only text

Well, the reason is becos u'r trying to send mms (even with text only) to a person that doesn't have GPRS and MMS activated on his sim card. That is why the recipient receives a legacy message.
What I was discussing is more to sending SMS over GPRS. Two different technologies, SMS and MMS. SMS, as u noe, is basically a text-based messaging service while MMS is a multimedia messaging service which allows u to send text and/or picture and/or videos and/or sounds to another MMS-enabled phone. The recipient who is using the MMS-enabled phone MUST enabled both GPRS and MMS on his SIM card services, else they will receive the legacy msg (otherwise known as the link to visit a website on the pc to see the mms).
Hope that clarifies, Prasad. Cheers ^_^x

I don't think you actually used GPRS in sending the SMS. Why? Because operators can OVERRIDE the phone setting, so wether you set the SMS setting to via GSM or GPRS, the SMS will still be routed via GSM. Operators are so wise, they will not allow us to have cheap or free SMS! :D
To prove my point, do this:
1. Set your GPRS to "When Needed."
2. Set ur phone to send SMS via GPRS.
3. Send an SMS to yourself.
4. Observe the "G" GPRS indicator and your Outbox.
If your SMS is really via GPRS, the "G" should turn-on for the moment that the SMS is being send-out from your Outbox. If no "G" and still you receive the SMS, you knew that it was not via GPRS. :D :D :D
