pin/puk codes is something else.

if enter 5 wrong unlock codes (#pw+.. codes), you can only unlock with cable. however, normal cable unlocking works only for older dct4 models (6310, 8310 etc).
if you have a newer one, and you have entered 5 wrong codes you'll need to flash the phone using a flash box (like griffin or prodigy).

as for the phone functionality - it will work exactly the same, you just lose the ability to unlock with codes.
