Anyone have any ideas on how to convert a MP3 128kbps to a AAC 64kbps?
I want to fit more songs on a 32MB MMC Card until I can get hold of a 128MB (budget problems you see lol :-P )
So, what do you need? Any software? Ok, I'll download that software, but how to use it? Can someone please give me a basic idea to kick start?
I will appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

a really stupid way:
burn your mp3s to audio cd
rip it with nokia audio*
I think nokia's aac is not compatible with other aac, like nero's
if they are compatitable, you might be able to convert mp3 to aac directly with nero recode

What a stupid concept indeed. Thanks garfieldip for informing me! I appreciate your help!
So, I have to use a CD Rewritable just to fit in more AAC files ... another stupid mistake from Nokia I presume?
Trying to fit more music into a 32MB MMC Card inserted in my Nokia HDR-1 Music Player I got yesterday
Just asking, but is there a standalone software that you press OK and it converts the selected MP3 to AAC automatically?

If you did have to you the above method, you could you some virtual cd drive program instead of wasting cds..

1. I'm using CD-RW, but it takes me 17mins to burn, 10 mins to re-encode to AAC, 20 mins to copy to HDR-1
2. What is a Virtual CD Drive Program? Can you explain a little, and give an example? Cheers!
Thanks garfieldip! And thanks in advance to AlmostRandom!

I use Alcohol 120% to create virtual drives.
Its pretty easy, you just create the image file on your harddrive as if you were gonna burn it but dont actually write the cd. Then you select this image in the prog to go on a virtual drive and the prog adds another drive to my computer eg F: etc which everything else thinks in just a normal CD-ROM.
You could then use the nokia progs as normal to 'rip' from the virtual drive and encode as normal.

Yep. I use Alcohol 120% for all my CD/DVD burning.
I wonder whether there is an easier way to convert MP3 to AAC?

Ok, I downloaded Alcohol 120% and "registered it". I'll start making images soon. But can I store 2 CD-ROM Games into the L: Drive?
And can I copy from C:/My Music straight to M: Drive?
PS: I hope there is an easier way to convert MP3 to AAC straight away!

Good news! I think I've found such an program that can convert MP3 to AAC straight away! I haven't tested it yet (I'm writing this reply before trying the prog)
The dBpowerAMP Program: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
The DBpowerAMP MP4 and AAC Codec: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-mp4.htm
If I still haven't posted up the results and you have tried the prog, plz post up what you have experienced. Thanks!

yeah it does, just add all your folders with mp3's in to the library of itunes, then right hand click on the song you want to convert and click on convert selection to AAC. i tried it and the file size was about the same as the original mp3. dont know if you cnan change the bitrate or anything of the AAC settings??? never bothered with aac before cos nothing i have uses aac except itunes

What? Same size as mp3? That's a crap job then!
Because I had a song "Name of the Game.mp3" 128kbps and converted to "Name of the Game.aac" 64 kbps (which is same quality) and the file size was cut down from 4 megs to 2MB!
But I'll try these three progs:
iTunes
Helix Mobile Producer
dbpoweramp
Will keep you posted!

That's pretty good if it cuts the file size back that much.

I did a test with Nero
I converted a 128kps mp3 to 64kps aac
The aac file is half sized as you expect
It played fine with nokia audio manager
but when i transfer it i get an error
So i copy the file directly to the ngage drive
I started music player on my ngage and it played without any error
I didn't notice any quality lost
but there are a few problems:
1. when you play the file, the music player won't show the time elapsed and and track length
2. when played with winamp the bit rate and track length is inaccurate and changed by time
If you want to do this, start nero in standard mode, on the manu bar, click extras > encode files
Make sure you select "export iso 13818-7 aac track"
CHEERS~!

Yea, but that program gives me a lot of probs. Keeps saying "Encountered Problem, must close" and screws up my MP3 converts to AAC
I found iTunes works pretty well. Have to test quality and see if it works on my Nokia HDR-1

hey guys why dont you try a program called dietmp3... im sure you can find it using google.... it dont convert the mp3 to aac but IT WILL COMPRESS THE FILE TO A SMALLER MANAGEBLE SIZE! and depending to your settings.... ( using in quality e.g. cd, radio, tape.. ) you can reduce the file to ALMOST 1/3 OF THE ACTUAL SIZE! i use that program and it has given me wonders.!!!! :D

I will try out Dietmp3, but I prefer the AAC file size because at 64kbps - it is smaller in size yet the same quality as a mp3 128kbps!
But yea, Dietmp3 will be on my To-Do list ...

I use MusicMatch instead of DietMP3. The only problem is that all it does is reduce the bitrate, and you lose sound quality.

i use goldwave and the LAME mp3 codec. with goldwave i can choose how many Hz, whether its mono or stereo and what kbps. it goes right from 48000Hz, stereo, 320kbps right down to 16000Hz, mono, 8kbps and with everything inbetween. so you can mix and match settings to try and get a good quality sound but small file size
