Hi weiss,

Flux is a conductive paste/liquid that is put on joints to be soldered helping the the heat to be transfered from the soldering iron/rework station to the component in a uniformed way.

Flux should be used on both parts being soldered (e.g the circuit pad and the SMD*) flux will enable you to "flow solder" which is a great way to solder small multi leg chips (SMD) to the circuit board, the Flux will only allow the solder to melt on the legs of the chips and solder pads on circuit. you can apply a blob of solder to one of the legs of the SMD and pull it along using your soldering iron. Flux can be bought at any good electronic retailer.

BGA soldering/reworking will take time and a lot of practice to get good at. you will need some sort of hot air rework station. You should practice removing and replaceing on old unworking phone boards. Have a look at the link below once on the home page go to the trouble shooting section (bottem left corner) this should help. A good rework station will cost you about $250 USD.

hope this helps
