Hello. I have 6600 with F\W version 3.42.1 which i found rather old by searching trough the post on this board.. I am sorry if these are stupid questions, but this phone is rather new to me, i've been flashing my 3310 like crazy, but i don't know about 6600 :) I am interested in:
- can i upgrade the F\W version & how (although i think the company where i bought the phone offers free upgrades, but i'm not sure if that's for symbian or F\W, also not sure if they have the latest stable versions)
- does EDGE require additional hardware (prolly does, but asking anyway :))
- can i upgrade symbian? i saw this post on my-symbian.com:

Nokia today introduced two new Feature Packs for the Series 60 Platform that will provide future smart phones with stunningly rich features and functionalities for operators, enterprises and consumers in all major markets. The impressive feature set of Series 60 will include multiradio support with GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA and CDMA, phone displays with higher resolutions and enhanced enterprise support, in addition to the exhaustive number of other features. It continues with listing the features, but i figure it's senseless to post all of that here. The post is\was on this link (http://my-symbian.com/main/index.php). If possible, i'd like these updates, since they sound very nice, but i'm not sure as if they aren't for 6620 and similar (newer).

thanks for the help.. this forum still owns :)

from the sounds of it, its pretty much describing the 6620, but also i think its just some of teh features they'll be putting into all upcomming series 60 phones, probably not osmething you can upgrade your 6600 to

Hi,

The latest firmware for the Nokia 6600 is V4.09.1, this is the one I have and works well. There is talk of another newer one just released in the lsat few days, V5.22 but I do not know anymore about it as yet.
V4.09.1 works well but as you may have heard doe's have it quirks. One of which is a downside and that is the sending of files using IR or BT. Somehow Nokia have implemented some more security to stop people sharing copyrighted material so easily and hence sending files, pics etc. is a pain.
It can still be done by renaming and using other 3rd party applications, one of which is the new MobiLuck app that talks to other fones via BT.

The new features you talked about are for the new Symbain phones and not our beloved 6600's. They cannot and will not be added to our one's, Nokia would be shooting themselves in the foot if they did. Also I don't think we have the right hardware anyway to make use of the services even if the operating system was capable.

Well said, coolice00! Firmware upgrades are designed to solve problems or bugs of the older firmware version. It may add a few improvements on an existing feature but will not add a major non-existing feature before. It may improve the overall speed, stability (fewer hangs) and performance of the phone, that's all.

Doubts about how effective the upgrade has done for my dino egg. I went through lots of hassle backing up my stuff and have yet to enjoy the so called " more effective use of 6600 firm ware" ever since the upgrade.

afterall, you can still try.
