let me confirm with u. did have the prob many a while ago...
the backup function backup EVERTHING including apps, calendar, etc! BUT excluding contacts. read on if u wanna know how to backup existing contacts the easiest way....
open up fexplorer/ seleq, go to C:\system and rename the folder called Data to anything u wish. then go into C:\system\XXX (the Data folder u just renamed) and copy the file, contacts.cdb and paste it to ur MMC, E: and finally rename the folder back to Data...(IMPORTANT: rename to Data and NOT data, note the capital letter of D)
u have just backup ur contacts!
to restore, rename the Data folder again, then go to ur MMC, E: and copy back the contacts.cdb and paste it to C:\system\XXX (the Data folder u just renamed) and finally rename the folder back to Data.
IMPORTANT: pls follow the steps carefully or u will screwed up ur contacts data.

Everything has been kept including contacts, messages and apps.
The only thing I had to do was rearrange my programs in the menu folders and reapply the theme (stored on the MMC).
BTW the store where I got it flashed asked me if I'd like them to backup it and restore for me. He did back up but forgot to restore. So I did it from my MMC backup with no problems.

can i ask...if can we go to e: create a new folder...then go back to c:system/data....then copy the contacts.cdb file over to the e:newfolder????
and then we can back up when we copy the contacts.cbd file from E:NEWFOLDER------>c:system/data???
or
can we go to e: create a new folder...then go back to c:system/data...copy the whole data folder to --->e:newfolder we had created just now...then to backup again we copy back the whole data file in e:newfolder to ---->c:system/data ??????
can we???

no. contacts.cdb cannot b moved, since it will say its alwaz in use. unless u go in flight mode or something.
or just back up ur contacts to sim, if ur sim can take them.

i doubt it works, but u can try.
it works only when u use flight mode or something. (smart launcher has tis function that i forgot the name, but does something like flight mode i tink...)

definitely work...cos i did mine and alot of of friends that way....
sim card? u can only store a limited amount.
@tzeonn, 6600 doesnt have the flight mode. thats why couldnt do it that way, its only for 3650 and ngage.

Cannot be done, error: "Failed to rename". :-?
did u rename the correct folder? its the C:/system/Data
unless u accidentally rename the Data into data, then it wun work...in that case, reformat ur phone b4 u try again...if still cannot, reformat another time.
i reformat mine twice in one incident because my Data was renamed into data.
however again, if din work, it might be due to another program reading the Data folder directly. try to use app Manager and close that prog.
dun worry, this method is sure to work on either the new or old firmware,.... i jus tried to rename the folder myself as i speak.

that couldnt be possible for me. i just did that backup function and after i restore, i lose ALL my phone contacts. and thats confirmed for my case and my friend's...
unless ur phone is a different 6600 from mine...(maybe different countries' 6600 backup work differently? that shldnt and couldnt be...) :???:

thats why u need to rename the folder.
the strange thing is the phone doesnt detect it! unless u rename it to data and not Data(the default)
dun worry guys, this method sure work...
i done it on my gf, campmates and my phone in the new and the old firmware.

hmm.... probably the new firmware can do this (backup contacts too)... i did the backup for my friends for the new firmware anyway.
but if u r using the older version, u may need to apply the steps. :)
Hey, THANK YOU reficul_x!!!
I have followed the method and it works. Thank You so much! I was been troubled for quite awhile back and I saw this thread. And yeah, the backup WILL not restore the contacts... I have ruined mine awhile ago. :D
Thanks,

Bah.... I have a European one if it can matter... Just didn't ask myself the question as it worked the 1st time! SW version should not matter, as I logically did my backup with the old 3.42....
I even tried to format/restore before I gave it to flash, just to check if it worked. No problems.

Bringing this thread in front again... I've had to reformat my phone lately, so I did a card backup before. I also copied the data files of the notes and calendar apps. Tried reficul_x' way to copy contacts.cdb, but I can't rename the "Data" folder (Already in use).
So that means I've been able to keep everything EXCEPT the contacts. I tried to restore the old backup after having made a new one, and the contacts GOT RESTORED. Not very easy to restore 2 times to check a contact though.
I keep my old backup in case anyone gets another solution, but I think I've virtually tried everything, an old sim that can't register to the network, killing processes with appman one by one hoping to find the process that opens the file, but with no success.
Copying the whole "Data" folder to the MMC copies the whole folder, EXCEPT that damn file, without any warning or what else.
Really getting mad!!!

hey friend, i did have that prob b4. i kill all the bloody app processes but to no avail.
yes, some pple cannot rename the Data folder and i wonder why too. weird. but utimately, (with my friend's phone) i format his phone twice, i can rename the Data folder... null sweat! however as u can guess that defeat the purpose as this erase ur contacts aso. but in this case, i successfully, rename the folder, copied the file, format the phone then i realised that i cannot rename the folder again. so i format another time, then i was able to rename it. then i paste it back.
for now, (i 'm trying it now) i still can rename the folder.
for many of u out there, u can gif it a try. it will work, trust me. i done it many times oredi 4 myself and some of my campmates.
PS: @GWCK, great that it worked for you!
@iceman5, did it work for ya too?

AAAAHhhhhh!!!!
Finally managed to do it!! :-P 8-)
I used another method I found in another thread around here:
contacts.cdb is closed during a restore!
So here is what I did:
Backup the phone
Start a restore from the backup
During restore, copy/paste the file to the mmc (it works!)
Format the phone
Backup it
Restore, and during this copy the file back.
Be careful not to copy the file too early, as it could then be replaced by the one from the backup.
Don't forget to keep copies of the "calendar" and "Notepad.dat" files, and anything else you would like to keep...
Avoid restoring an old backup after formatting, as I've noticed that the unneeded old files that will be copied back to c: will stay here even if you then restore the new backup (made after formatting).
Hope this will help!

Kilrah

In fact why I was getting mad is because I had imported all my contacts from my old Palm, and the phone number formats were incorrect for the phone to recognise them. So I spent around 1h correcting them on the phone. You should have seen my thumb after that operation....
PS: Maybe the file is also unlocked during a backup, and not only during a restore. Haven't tried yet, but this would save some time as there would be fewer operations to do. If nobody tries before I'll give the info after the next format (hopefully not too soon) :-P
