Hi there, I have just received a 256mb memory card for my Nokia
3650, which I was going to use primarily for mp3 playback. It was my
assumption that the onboard Real Player would be capable of doing
so, but it doesn't recognize the mp3's, and a quick google search
this morning tells me that I probably need to download an additional
mp3 player. Can anyone recommend a decent free player and explain to
me exactly how to install it (in laymans terms, I am a phone dummy)
from the memory card. I should mention that I have a USB card
reader/writer to transfer files from my pc to the memory card.

Thanks,

Alex.

P.S. I downloaded a 3650 mp3 player .exe file via Kazaa this morning
but cannot seem to browse to the file in my phone, let alone intall
it, the same goes for the .jar games that I have attempted to put on
my phone. If you could point me in the right direction it would be
massively appreciated.

to play mp3's using real player, you need to download and install the advanced real player, then it will be able to play mp3's but still kinda pointless because you cant make playlists etc.

i use UltraMP3! and think its one of the best MP3 players about.

you can get it off www.aivanet.com if you do a search in the symbian section you'll find it

installing is goin to be a bit harder if you've only got a card reader/writer. You'll need FExplorer or SeleQ (both very good file explorers)

but if you have, then just skip the next 2 steps :)

theres 2 ways you can do it,

1. set up email on your phone and send the .sis file of one of the file explorers to yourself in an email as an attachment, then download it onto your phone and install it. bearing in mind, you cant use hotmail or yahoo accounts etc on the default email program on the phone, using one from your internet service provider would be fine as long as you've got the incomming and outgoing mail server address (these can be found in outlook on your computer if you've got that?), also do a search on here for email on 3650, think there was a huge post about how to use hotmail or yahoo accounts on your 3650. thinking about it, you could just send UltraMP3 to your phone, but id strongly advise you get a file explorer installed on your phone, their one of handyest things to have

2. is to use unMakeSIS. its a great program that basically unpacks the .sis files on your computer into the right folders. so you just unpack one of the file explorers onto your hard drive on your comp. when its unpacked, you should have some some folder called "system" and an "App" folder inside that with another folder inside that has the program in. all you do from here is copy the folder thats inside the app folder to the system folder of your mmc card. if you cant see the system folder then its probably hidden. click on tools at the top of the window, then folder options, then click on the view tab. scroll down the list of check boxes until you see one called "show hidden files and folders". put a check in that box and hit apply. if you can now see the system folder on your mmc, open it, and then open the app folder and paste the folder you copied into there. if there isnt an app folder just make one.
if you cant see the system folder then you probably havnt formatted the MMC with the phone and/or you havnt installed anything on the MMC yet. if this is so then just create an System folder and do the above.
this basically installs the file explorer onto the MMC card

once you got a file explorer on your phone, just copy and paste ultraMP3.sis to your mmc. then put it back into your phone and start it up. once its started up open the file explorer (it should appear in your menu) go to E:\ and in there you'll see ultraMP3.sis, just open this and it will install it. just install it where you want (phone memory or MMC, MMC is probs best) and theny our sorted.

now just drag your mp3's to your MMC card (maybe make a folder on your MMC called MP3?). open ultraMP3! and click on menu, then edit playlist, then menu again and then press rescan file system and this should find all your MP3's on your MMC.

as the 3650 is only mono sound, you'd be best to compress your mp3's a bit and make them mono.

i use goldwave and Lame MP3 encoder and these settings

32000 hz
64 kbps
mono

makes each MP3 about a meg and a bit big, but they sound pretty good on the phone

hope this helps and aint to complicated for ya?? :)

Wow Cokecan722! That's brilliant!...

...Have managed to follow your instructions to the word (figure 2), and everything Explorer/MP3 wise is running great.

Without wanting to push my luck could you just give me some kind of a pointer with regard to game installation? I have a cd with a bunch of folders containing .jar/.jad files and I'm not quite sure what to do with them. Do I need them both, or does just one do the job? Tried to install Puzzle Bobble but my phone doesn't seem to installing it properly... Have a feeling however, that this may be to do with a minor bug in my phone - when I open the 'Applications' folder it takes absolutely ages to view the contents (or lack of it, in my case), and sometimes it just freezes the phone altogether... As the games are being installed to the Applications folder by default I think I just might be struggling to access an otherwise succesful install. Any ideas? Is it possible to install the games into an alternate folder?

Thanks again,

Is a great help. :)

...Is ok, have rectified the problem I was having by doing a Phone Reset (although accidentally did a 'Deep' Reset rather than a 'Normal', so lost most of my phone numbers... Whoops). Can now install the .jar files quite simply.

Thanks again for the help.

hey, thats no problem :) just like to help out a bit

for the java games, just put the .jar somewhere on your mmc and then go into the applications folder and it should find it

as for the slow loading time of the applications folder, think there was another post just recently about this.

the guy said that the more messages you got in your inbox, outbox, sent messages etc affect the time it takes to open the applications folder because when you open this folder, it searches your inbox etc to find new .jar files to install. so the more messages, the longer it takes to scan.

no idea if it actualy works??? cos i dont bother with java games much (to me i see them as games specifically designed for series 40 phones like 7250i etc and kinda downgrade your series 60 phone to one of them), prefere some decent .sis games like sky force, rally pro and geopod or doom.

much more fun than java games :)

Could you tell me how to correctly go about installing .sis files on my 3650 please... Am having no trouble with the .jar files now, but the .sis files I still can't work out how to do.

Thanks again.

ah, their easy.

just copy and paste the .sis to your MMC, then go into FExplorer or SeleQ and go to E:\ (your MMC) and you should see a list of files that are on your MMC, just scroll down to the .sis file and open it. it should then copy the file to the installer and install it.

seeing as your using a 3650, there aint much ram unfortunitly, so when installing a file bigger that 2mb, you might have trouble when its copying it to the installer. you need X ammount of space on your phone memory to install it.

a way to get round this is to use SeleQ if your not allready, make a folder on your MMC called nokia (if there isnt allready one), then a folder inside that called installs. now just move your .sis file to the installs folder and open it there. it should then just install it without copying it to the installer, therefor letting you install files bigger than 2mb. files such as GeopodXE

hope this helps
