I know that Nokia are trying to break into the handheld gaming device market and don't want to dilute the appeal of the NGage by having other devices that can do the same thing.
Trouble is, how are they convincing the developers of the games not to 'port' them to the rest of the community? Surely the developers know other symbian devices exist, so perhaps they're getting a HUGE payout by nokia to not release the games for the other devices. This could help explain why the game titles are so slow to come out - nokia are paying out big $$$ to release each one.
Whatever the reason, Nokia are shooting themselves in the foot, because they're not going to be able to compete against PSP in terms of games and gfx quality so the only thing they have (and it's a big PLUS) is the 'Arena' which they could involve so many more people in, and yet they limit themselves.
NGage was a great proof of concept device, but the sooner they drop it's exclusiveness and take advantage of the Symbian marketshare the better. Sure they should keep a series (N-Series? :) ) of phones which are suited to playing games (with similar button layouts to ngage etc), but the software restriction has gotta go.
Imagine for a moment if symbian developers started making their products and games NNC (non-ngage-compatible). It's easy enough to put in a few lines of code which identify the device and decide whether to run the app or not. And then ID software released Quake 1,2+3 NNC... And then another developer released "SooperDooperProgram NNC" which turned your phone into a universal remote+radar detector+radio+mp3 player+hovercraft+space rocket... anyway I'm getting carried away... but you get the point.
I don't think Nokia are stupid, and neither are the developers releasing software for the NGage, so I really wonder how long the NGage is going to stay dangling over the edge of the cliff, before they let it fall to it's timely death.

We cannot blame Nokia, they do it to protect their investment from software pirates.

:-? I dont know, if nokia is paying out big $$$ on game developers then why are other game developers e.g. Squaresoft, Namco, etc. are not attracted to make games for N-gage?

I know that for console machines, manufacturers don't make money selling their machines for sony to make a profit on a PS2 each customer must by the console and 3-5 games.
So in the same light nokia probably aren't making any money by selling Ngages (especially to contract customers). They'll make there money by selling licences to 3rd party developers, nokia also probaby has to pay psion for every license it sells. Psion probably restrict which models the games can work for by the price they charge nokia.

Hmmm... A conspiracy theory, eh?
I suppose it's feasable... But I dunno...

Hmm why will nokia be paying psion? Nokia bought Psions 31% stake in symbian in Feburary (or they bought the portion they were allowed - I think the other founding members exercised their buying rights).

You mean it's just like Chelsea football club, Roman Abramovich. You buy it cheap from your sister company i.e. psion license and then charge everybody else double what you paid.

Hmm, maybe it's not huge amounts of money, perhaps just enough to placate the temptation to make the titles available for other s60 devices.

I guess such developers already have large amounts invested in other projects, and can't afford the resources to develop for ngage. Not sure..
But I'm sure interested to hear other people's theories about why/how big name developers that do develop for ngage limit their potential profits? We all know that nearly every ngage game (subject to memory contraints) could be modified by the developer very easily to run on other s60 devices.
I guess it's only a matter of time before the big names realise the huge future potential of mobile gaming and latch on.

What do you base that opinion on? I haven't seen any hints of what might make the ngage2 the best, or even if they are making an ngage 2?

They gotta make an Ngage2 the mobile phone market has shown that there is enough people looking to turn their phone into a personal entertainment hub. The fact people are still playing crap java games means that twice as many will play good games.

Could it be that the ngage was an experiment in luring/introducing game developers into the mobile market, and now that they know the market exists, the ngage can be dropped and games can be produced for all new s60 phones?

i got told by orange that the Ngage has now been discontinued thats why theyve been on offer in most places. So now only Ngage QD in shops.

I hadn't heard that one but is quite plausable, the QD must be so much cheaper to make. And also the Ngage might become like the matrix phone, collectable.

I sort of agree. Obviously the current ngage is not going to last forever, it will be old technology very very soon. IMHO nokia should keep a 'game-oriented' phone in their lineup (one with the d-pad etc). Perhaps they should create an 'ngage series' of phones.
Sooner or later the ngage's successor will have to move to a later version of symbian. We all know that the QD runs 6.x for compatibility. What happens when they upgrade and the original ngage games don't work anymore? It's gonna happen...

Hopefully by the time we get a proper Ngage2, hopefully nokia will have learnt alot from sony and nintendo and give us a better system.

yes....i would really like the old ngage to just be inproved not discontinude because....i like my n gage (sept it broke on me 2 times and had to get a new one) but then i think they could improve it more....i think though that the QD has less of a chance to break or sumn cuz if you think about it iv heard alot of crap about n gages breaking and myn broke on me as well so mabey nokia is just tierd of fixing them for free and what not i meen i would but hey ITS THERE FAULT FOR MAKING IT BREAK....(hope i dint confuse u all)

Perhaps they'll start to make an Ngagei. Much like the 8910, a 8310i in a titanium case with double the price tag.

@ first when i heard about Nintendo DS i was very excited. But then did some homework on it, & didn't like what it had 2 offer or not offer. Then 2 put the finally nail in the coffin, the experience of trying it out on the train from the passenger i was sitting next 2. What a waste of time Nintendo spent on that DS.
LONG LIVE NOKIA N-GAGE/N-GAGE QD!!!! :-D
