Ok lets sort this out this first, WAP & MMS are the types of services that are supported by GPRS. Get it? No?

You see even with the correct settings for WAP on your mobile, without a GPRS service/connection from you network provider, it is totally useless. So again, WAP runs on GPRS and yes its not cheap. I'm suspecting it'd be d same for data calls. Most network providers now charge per kilobits. So like opening a site that is "http://www." can be very expensive as those might contain lots of graphics and there is where your credit will lost.

Having said that, what do you think your WAP on your Ericsson was running on? I'm guessing that some parts of the settings includes setting of Access Point, Proxy Server Address & Proxy Port Number to name just a few. If that is so then thats settings for GPRS.

The 6600 totally supports WAP. To you use this you need to only launch the Services application, set the Default Access Point at the Settings area and you are good to go. I hope that helps and if my points are incorrect, I'm sure some expert in here will point it out.

Just want to clarify on something so that we'll not be mis-led on what is the difference between WAP and MMS. WAP is not a type of service but simply a protocol- a standardised way that a mobile phone talks to a server (where the services have been provided like downloadable ringing tones, picture messages, etc.) installed in the mobile phone network. And GPRS is one means of transporting services such as MMS, data packets from internet, etc.

Yeah ok maybe I should say, GPRS facilitates WAP & MMS. I still think its one of the "service" that would be made available when GPRS is available. GPRS does transport the WAP commands from the phone to a server to extract certain files such as tones, pics, etc., while MMS is more like a push command to the server, one way traffic.

So I'm curious, are you saying that if a network provider doesnt provide GPRS, that you can still have WAP on your phone? How? And please dont say by connecting to a web enabled pc via BT.

Yes, you can still have WAP on your phone even if it is a legacy (N3210, N3310, etc) phones. So obviously I cannot say BT is the way neither Infrared? right?

As you know before GPRS came into GSM evolution, there was CSD or the enhanced HSCSD in GSM Networks. HSCSD allows you to access nonvoice services (such as downloadable ringtones, internet browing, etc.) at 3 times faster than CSD, which means subscribers are able to send and receive data from their portable computers or handsets at a speed of up to 28.8 kbps; this is currently being upgraded in many networks to rates of and up to 43.2 kbps.

So in other words, GPRS only supplements today's High Speed Circuit Switch Data and Short Message Service. The only difference between the two bearers are their data rates, wherein HSCSD has <57.6 kbps while GPRS has >100 kbps. And also GPRS already supports Internet-based content and packet-based data services, Internet browsing, e-mail on the move, powerful visual communications, multimedia messages and location-based services.

But both bearers (GPRS and HSCSD) can transport packets of data from mobile station to a WAP server. Only the speed will be your setback if you use HSCSD.

Thats really good info. But correct me if I'm wrong, CSD is not really "real" WAP right? Overhere CSD is called something else, its more concentrated on extracting News, Email, Bank Account check, etc.,

Definitely CSD is not a WAP. CSD is a mobile transport/bearer to access WAP contents.

Because of the speed of CSD which is 9.6 kbps which is very slow compares to HSCSD and GPRS, the transfer of data will not be in real time. That is one of reason why CSD is only use for retrieving static dat or informations as you have mentioned.

Your other way to go WAP is via CSD. It will be more expensive than via GPRS because you will be charged airtime rate. For example, here in Philippines, GPRS is 0.25 pesos per KB, while airtime is 6.50 per minute and fraction of a minute. Here, if I browse within the WAP portal of my service provider via GPRS, there is no charge unless I go to external URL or download contents. But if I browse via CSD, airtime charging will begin during the process of connecting to WAP, and continue charging while browsing.

Better go with the flow of technology. GPRS can do a lot for you while HSCSD will cost more and limited services can offer for you.

Or the simple thing to do is dont browse the web via fone and find a nearest internet cafe!!

I have this problem and have someone at my local Nokia care centre looking in to it. My phone worked fine before and one day it just stopped!
If I find out what the problem is I'll let you know.
BTW, one of the suspisions was a conflict between some software in the phone and the service provider.

Where do live?

Nokia have just called me and told me they are running checks on this fault with the service provider. My phone has English, Indonesia and Malayu language selections and it seems it's these phones which have a problem.

Go to services, settings, default encoding and then select Unicode (UTF-8).

Let me know how it goes!
