Here in the US, Symbian gets no respect. Windows Mobile smartphones have beaten Symbian phones, simply because of OS familiarity.
I have used, but never owned a Windows phone, so for those who have, why are the positives and negatives vs. Symbian?

Symbian is destined to become the Commodore of the cell phone world.
Symbian is great for your average personal user, there are a wide variety of apps and games out there.
However, trying to integrate Symbian phones into a business (typcially Microsoft) environment is a mission. Symbian developers need to get the basics of integration into a MS environment sorted or symbian is simply going to die. Until I can pick up a symbian phone, plug in a few ip addresses and paswords and have access to my vpn/exchange email/remote desktop etc, WITHOUT having to spend a lot of time and money on additional apps (for the phone and servers), there's just no hope when competing against a m$ phone which does these things at no additional cost.
Integrating a Microsoft cell phone into a business environment is far far easier, and of course there's the os familiarity factor. As much as I hate the fact, microsoft will soon dominate the mobile OS market also. Symbian is destined to become a mobile gaming platform at best.

tbh with Nokia and SE using symbian i think that its far from death, when these two move away from that then i think that you can say its dying.
never had a MS phone but played with one and personally didnt like it, i also think that yea its fine for a REAL high end user who want access to features like its been said then fine go for a MS phone other wise i think that most people dont have much use for them

SE also announced the will make phones which is like e.g. 7610. Not unlikely they will use the S60-platform, if Nokia allows it.

Sorry guys, like I said, symbian's days as the number one smartphone os are very numbered.
The cell phone market is like the computer market - you can sell as many as you like to home/personal users, but unless you get businesses onboard, it's pointless. The market is driven by business.
Nokia have also made a stupid mistake with limiting Ngage games to the ngage platform. They could sell twice as many phones if they marketed them as 'ngage' compatible - at least as a games platform symbian could be guaranteed to hold market share for a while longer.

Symbian software is still incorporated into a significant proportion of the smartphone market share. I know I'll always support it, if not for the fact that it's a helluvagood OS, then because it isn't made by Microsoft. Besides, I can't even find where the hell you get good games and software for Windows Mobile. No, business men don't comprise quite enough of the smartphone consumer base to establish that Symbian's "days are numbered." Besides, the software does an excellent job of cooperating with microsoft software (6630 with microsoft document viewers; all series 60 sync well with windows and outlook software).
But ur right about one thing. The higher-ups at Nokia are idiots for not expanding the n-gage base to all series 60 phones. Imagine. They'd have people buyin the games for their regular smartphones instead of hacking them to avoid buying an unsightly, 200 dollar toy of an n-gage to play them on. I know i'd legitamately buy n-gage games if my 3650 could play them. Really, they had the chance to establish a bridge between cell phones and gaming. They had a decent system when it came out, and some strong support in terms of games. They had superb phones, as well. If they had had a brain that rivaled the size of their left nut, they'd have integrated the two and possibly monopolized the market of people who wanted cell phones capable of playing games. Instead we have 200 dollar game boys fused with cell phones and companies like samsung trying to crank out these bull shit products like their game controller attachments for certain "gaming phones" (i.e. phones that can play simple java games). No one's gonna buy this crap.

I have traded my Nokia 6600 (Symbian OS S60) for an i-mate pocket pc phone ( Windows Mobile 2003 Premium ) thats why I havent been here for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time.
And I have to say, there is no way I am going back to symbian after windows. I had most of the platforms and heres the count down:
4) Symbian Series 80 ( Nokia 9290 Communicator )
-Software hard to master and confusing
-Not compatible with all the PC extensions
-Excellent for typing ex: homework while on the go
-Pain to transfer it to a PC
-Not to many apps out there in the market
3) Symbian UIQ ( SE P900 )
-Software VERY hard to master
-Not very stylish when it comes to menu designs
-capabilities are limited
2) Symbian S60 ( Nokia 6600, Nokia 3650, Nokia 7650 )
-Excellent Menu design
-Not very hard to master
-Once mastered u fall in love with the interface
-an abundant varieties of apps
-phone design and layout is the best among other platforms.
1) Windows Mobile 2003 (i-mate Pocket PC phone edition)
-Awesome Compatibility with a PC
-File transfer via the USB craddle is a dream
-Pen input is sometimes a drag, but dialing from the screen is easy due to its enormous size, so u can use ur fingers while on the go.
-Microsoft Word/Excell/outlook preinstaled - powerpoint available as a 3rd party app
-it is a pain in the ass turning the phone option on/off
- Awesome sound quality, put wma files as ringtones, and u wont believe that this is a phone ringing.
- Full screen videos
