View Full Version : General questions and 6260-bugs

Hello again :)
I have to bother you guys again with myself, my BF's new phone and a lot of questions.
Now, first to a few bugs in the 6260. First, the alarm clock. When setting the tone, it plays a hell loud. However, when the alarm goes off, it is almost inaudible weak, tough with a strong vibration (the vibrator is louder than the alarm!). This is regardless if "silent" or whatever profile selected, and regardless wether the phone is ON or OFF when the alarm goes off.
Then, the mp3 player (Real Player). It is not stereo, ok, can live with that. But when playing a mp3, first the sound quality is BAD (no audible difference between a 192kb/s and a 56 kb/s version of the same song with either headset or speaker!) and, more important, the volume control doesn't work! It plays at a fixed volume, using the navigation key lefty or right does move the "volume" slider icon on the display, but it does not play louder or softer. Only when the slider reaches "0", it turns the sound OFF.
SMS can NOT be saved to MMC! In the "help" i found that item, it describes how to do it and then (ha ha) mentiones "This setting may not be available". It is in fact not available. Why? Maybe because this phone has a hot-swapable MMC?
When losing signal (subway!) the 6260 loves to hard crash. It then displays only "Nokia" on the display, won't react to any button. Only removing the battery and re-inserting it brings it back to life.
That were all the bugs i found so far (during three days having that phone). But i am impressed with what those Symbians can do - so now i want one for myself, too. I am considering a 3650 which i could get quite cheap, second hand. It's a brick, but it has all those functions too.
Now i want to ask: Can that one be updated from os 6.x to 7.0 like the 6600 or the 6260?
Do the apps for 7.0 run on it? How about N-Gage games?
What is the max. memory (MMC) size for either 6260 or 3650?
What cam resolution does the 3650 have? The 6260 is VGA that i know :)
Finally... is the 3650 crashy? Or is it somewhat reliable? I want to use it mainly for internet (it's got a html browser... or..?) and picture taking. What is it's screen, TFT or STN?
Any reply would be appreciated :)
Kindest regards.....

The 3650 can't be upgraded to os7 but os 6 is pretty much the same apart from the themes and most of the apps work on both phones with few exceptions. Ngage games are a different story, the 3650 only has 4Mb of ram so it only plays about 3 or 4 ngage games.
The max mmc size is stupidly large, I know people with 1Gb mmc's. The camera in the 3650 is basically the same as the one in the 6260, it just runs on different software. The screen is almost identical too, just not as bright and less colours.

nope, no other firmwares will work, mainly because of hardware and components differences.
its vga cam.
and u can install an app called opera, or netfront to surf normal websites.
for ngage games, since 6260 is pretty new, better to trial and error.

Hello again :)
Thank you for all the replies..... i wasn't aware of the fact that the 3650 has only a 4.096 colour screen, now i was happy with those when using my 6610 but since i got 65k screens myself (Sanyo and Panasonic) i wouldn't want to go back to just 4k. Besides, it is specially the screen on the 6260 that impresses me so much, loading pictures on that phone makes them look almost better than on the PC!
I am now not sure what phone i should start saving for... the 3650 is a) a brick and b) only 4k screen. AND no themes (i love that feature too!). Well, maybe it's gonna be a 7610 but that is a heck expensive and i think it's does not have IrDA port, right? Bluetooth, yeah, but i don't want to have to buy yet another expensive add-on to my PC, i just got that IrDA thingy which works so well with my Panasonic AND that 6260.
Maybe i'll settle for a 3660 which is also a brick, but it's got a 65k screen, i read on the web... and IrDA :) How about the 7600, you mentioned it's a "joke", why is that? Isn't it a Symbian..? I tought it is Symbian 8.0 because it supports W-CDMA? Or was i misinformed?
Thanks in advance for any advise :)

Sorry, i forgot to mention this. Yesterday i installed this "FExplorer" thing on that 6260, and it works perfectly. Now i am able to see all those files, and even copy and move them around. I have 4 "drives" in that 6260, which are c: (ram), d: (ram), e: (drive) and z: (rom). All of them contain several folders which in turn contain files.
Now i understand that e: is the MMC card, because there are all those apps i installed and also the mp3's and m3u's. What i would like to know:
Where can i find the folder that contains the received SMS that have been moved to sub-folders in "My Folders"..? And what is that folder (or file) named?
I think that, once located, it is possible to just copy that file or folder to e: and have it there for next time the SIM is changed and the original folders have been cleared (for whatever reason that happens). Am i right?
And, last question for today... is there an application to put either a usefull alarm clock (a LOUD one!) on that 6260, or at least an application that allows to add more things to that "To Do" list? Because the original alarm clock quite sucks (can't even set it to just go off every day at the same time, no, have to set it again every evening! Both my Sanyo and my Panasonic allow for "daily" or "mon - fri" or "mon - sat") by being a bitch to set (menu - extras - clock - alarm clock - set alarm clock) and being inaudible soft when going off. Besides that, it is not possible to add a shortcut to "Alarm clock" or at least "Clock" into the "To Do" list. I am sure there must be something like a "Symbian Power Alarmclock" or whatever application around? After all you get tons of these for a computer :)
Thanks for any tips :)
Kind regards.....

Actually I used the calender to give me daily alarms for a month on my 3650. I haven't tried it on my N-gage QD, but I guess it's the same and on your phone too.

for the alarm, there are plenty of applications out there that you could use, like the extended profiles from psiloc. and many more...
for the messages, they are located in c:\system\mail
and no you will not be able to locate a single message or folder. nokia built the messaging system of system like that. it acts like a database and the phone just queries the stuff in needs from there.
on the 6600 or 3650, or 3660, or 7610.
if you want to manually save your messages you can copy x:\system\mail (x being the drive where you chose to save your messages) and paste them on your computer.
if you want to restore a certain copied mail folder, it would be a bit more complicated.
you have to paste the mail folder on the drive which your messages arent saved. for example you chose your settings for the messages to be saved in the phone, then it would use the c: which means that you have to paste the mail folder onto your mmc. be sure that you delete the e:\system\mail folder before pasting. after pasting, you now then go to your options and chose memory card, chose save or delete if you want the messages in your phone to be saved. notice that it was restored already but the messages on your phone was not there if you chose save. that is one restriction you have to bare but for me i use it as an advantage. how? if you look at it in some way, it is like having 2 mail profiles which have their own identity. i have 2 girls so i have to filter my messages in order for me not to be caught. i used this feature to hide em. whenever i am with the other one, i chose the phone messages and whenever i am with the other one, i chose the memory card message. its cool actually.
just post here if you did not get what i wrote here.
nokia! here i come! im switching to 6260 from my k700i

Hello :)
Thanks for that reply... but i am healed now, sorry to say so. And you mentioned "Nokia, here i come - switching to 6260 from k700"
DON'T!!!!!
The 6260 is a pile of junk. It's just ditched it's "Web" application again, no reset or other trick helps, it plays with it's operator logo like it's day's mood is, and other stuff randomly fails and "fixes itself".
And the NSC "don't yet have the service software because the model is too new".
Fine. I paid a full months salary to get this thing, now can use only half of it's features and can't even get it fixed! Useless.
Don't even think about a 6260 for at least 3 more months, when the NSC's are equipped with the software and shit. See my other thread.
For me, i think i'm selling it and get my BF a good japanese phone. Those don't play up and IF they do, you get 'em fixed everywhere, well, at least here in Thailand.
Sorry to disappoint you, but i am definitely and fully "off Nokia" now. This 6260 just sucks.
Regards.....

maybe you could sell it to me? ;)
Hello again :)
Now i want to ask: Can that one be updated from os 6.x to 7.0 like the 6600
no
How about N-Gage games?
Memory too low 4 allowing 'em running
(only 2 or three ngage games work on 3650)
What is the max. memory (MMC) size [...] 3650?
4 first sw versions (2.x) i've heard 64 ...
4 other versions and 4 other mobile phones ... max mmc size supported = max MMC size you can buy
Finally... is the 3650 crashy?
yes :(
it's got a html browser... or..?)
You should install Netfront or doris ... Using Opera on a 3650 you can fullfill heap memory in a few time (expecially surfing on vBulletin forums)
sorry 4 possible mistakes

4 N-gage games work on 3650. And mine wasn't very crashy. It hanged on occasion because of problems with apps/games, but not more than the QD.

Out of the 4 s60's i've owned the 3650 has been the most stable, especially considering the amount of apps, etc I installed on it.

Hello again....
Well i tought "hit it, either it dies (and i get my money back) or it evtl. works. And i installed ALL the stuff back on it, IrRemote, Opera, Worldclock, Torch, FExplorer etc... whatever i tested during the last 7 days, all in one go. And then i did a *#7370# to give it the kick.
Well, EVERYTHING freakin' works, except the "Web" thing that still complains about "Full memory, close some application and try again".
I tried Appman - won't even install. And same with "Switcher". So i can't see if there is some hidden app running somewhere...... well, i guess that is Symbian's secret.
Now, with Opera running, we can at least access WAP pages (and www pages, but the latter so slow that it isn't worth it). The catch is, that bookmarks, received via SMS, won't work.... they still try to open "Web". And, using "Opera", we can NOT use the AIS "TV on mobile" service, it complains "your mobile does not support this service" because it's not the original browser! Now i still need to get the "Web" thing working, otherwise a lot of $$ is wasted.
Kind regards....

hi, maybe u got some apps running in the background? they take up ram, thus the low memory error.
press and hold menu, then press c to close any running apps u see. or simply restart phone and try.

Hello :)
Certainly i had no apps running... i'm not that stupid :) Instead, i went to Nokia Care Center yesterday, amd there got confirmed that the 6260 has several bugs:
"Mine" browser bug, caused by a self-corrupting file (that can not be fixed- needs re-flash!), SMS that disappear when the battery is removed (SIM change!), SMS can not be saved on MMC (Menu entry just not available) and connection to PC via DKU-2 cable won't work.
They said that a new firmware is already released, which fixes these bugs, however they yet don't have the "necessary equipment" to do the upgrade. Also the shipped PC-Suite version won't run on XP-SP2, instead only on SP1.
So we will need to wait 4-6 weeks for Nokia to get their "necessary eqipment" to Bangkok, before this phone can be fully used again.... thanks very much.
Never buy a BRAND NEW phone.... better wait few months for new FW releases, and to make sure the NSC's have the equipment :)
Kind regards....

Hello :)
I am also able to change my mind... and decided to get into this Symbian craze myself. Maybe i'll learnb how to cope with the errors of that 6260 when i got myself a Symbian to mess around with... so i bought myself a 3650. Because it was cheap (traded the Panasonic, actually got more for it that i paid!)
Now, i already installed a lot of apps, deleted some, messed around, found out how to get wallpapers in the correct size.... and didn't manage to crash it yet! Even BT works w/o problemms...... maybe i just got a particular good one :)
However... how in the world do i get it to accept mp3 files as ringtones??? I found that the built-in Real Player doesn't play mp3's, no probs, got myself Ultramp3. But heck, still i can't get them as ringtones. The files sit on the MMC because the phone memory is too small for that kind of stuff.
I KNOW people use mp3's as ringtones on those phones... how do they do it????
And.... just curious... why does the picture quality on the screen look so much better than on 6610 or 7250, even tough it's same 4k colours? It almost looks like 65k...........
And... that MMC is ridiculous small (16 MB only), planning to get a large one. Can i take any brand 256 or 512 MB? I heard that some 1GB make problems, how about those "smaller" ones? I want all my favourite songs in there :)
Oh, btw a good way to get more mp3's in it is to "compress" them... using Musicmatch Jukebox (www.musicmatch.com) it allows to "convert" from mp3 to mp3, so i just take an ordinary mp3 (128 or 192 kb/s) and convert it to 56 kb/s. Result: 1.2 instead of 5.5 MB size, and on the phone - no difference in sound quality :)
Kindest regards.....

Only the newer symbians (7610, 6260, etc) can use mp3's as ringtones, you'll have to convert them into wav to use them on the 3650.
The screen looks better because it has a higher res, 208x176 compared with 124x124 I think. It's also a different type of screen, tft compared with some digital matrix thing.
There can be problems with any size of mmc, it just depends on the brand. Look around and check that someone else has tried the type of mmc you want to get before buying it.
Diet Mp3 is the daddy when it comes to scaling down the size of mp3's

Hello again :)
@izzi-concept
I paid 16.500 Baht for that 6260, which equals around 415 us$. I bought the phone one week after it was first available, now in the meantime i understand that NOKIA has NOT yet officially released it here (!) but is importing it from Malaysia, just as all the "grey importers" do. But Nokia original shops sell it as well, for the same price (actually 16.600 Baht but a little discount is always possible). I expect the price to drop very soon.
@yuppo
I do understand that i can not use actual mp3's (.mp3 files) as ringtones, but i read in several websites that i need to convert them to either .wav files (take huge amounts of memory) or .ogg files (take very small amounts of memory). Yesterday, after passing my last reply, i went googling again and an hour later i had the ogg-encoder/decoder/player software for PC, an ogg-player for the phone as well as a ogg-recognizer for the phone. What's missing is a file called "ovcontroller.sis" which makes the phonme able to use these as ringtones. It seems that there are several versions of that file (7650/3650, 6600 old FW, 6600 new FW, 7610/6260 etc). The version i have does not install on my phone ("This application may not be compatible..." then stops installing) and i am now looking for the correct one. About the ogg i have to say, not only is it possible to get a full-length song in acceptable quality below 800 kb (original mp3 was 5.2 MB) but also those play way louder on the phone than the mp3 in Ultramp3! Now i need very urgently a much bigger MMC card...... because i got several dozen songs that i want to carry with me, due to lack of radio in that phone :) Let's see, maybe next week i'll go shopping for a 256 MB one.
@Sony-Ericsson
Yeah i am beginning to think that i just got a lucky one here... i have two friends who use 3650's and both of them have regular problems with their phones.... and during the last three days, i have installed/deleted/moved/copied/pasted/messed with a lot of stuff, tested shareware, incompatible stuff (which definitely KILLS the 6260 as happened!) etc, and yet it still has to hang for the first time. But what puzzles me about it is the strange behaviour of the battery meter... even playing with the phone whole day, most of that time on GPRS, it still shows 7 bars, untill all of a sudden it drops to 1 and beeps "low battery". I found that periodically shutting it down and restarting it brings more accurate reading (i.e. 7 before shutdown, 4 after reboot). But that's so far the only "bug" i could find... strange Symbian (in a good way here). Oh, and, compared with the Panasonic i used before, the GPRS is a bloody snail..... but i think that is generally for Nokia, since the 6260 isn't much faster and the 7250 was slow as well. Maybe just the Panasonic was exceptionally fast? It was a "Class 10 GPRS" device. Does that mean the speed?
Oh, and does anyone know if there is a browser "Opera" version that runs on the 3650? I got a version for 6600/7610 (runs on the 6260 as well) that won't install on the 3650 (memory too low, delete some data) or, if really a LOT of mem is free (more than 2.5 MB) it will install, but won't start. I think it's a version for Symbian 7.0. Damn why can't they make those things downward compatible???
Kind regards....

for mp3 to wav:
use pc suite, FILE TRANSFER option.
then, send to a folder called sounds/digital folder, on ur mmc.
pc suite will then convert the file from mp3 to wav. (converts videos too)
go to control panal of pc suite to on/off the converters.
and no, wav files converted by pc suite is much smaller, about half the size of mp3. its optimised for mono i assume.

I also noticed the strange behavior of the battery meter, but it didn't bother me either. A version of Opera does work on 3650, but I use Netfront as it uses less memory. I think Netfront is just as good as Opera. There are also other browsers which is like Opera, but I haven't tried them. But I recommend Netfront. :)

Hello again :)
@tzeonn
Unfortunately i can not use PC Suite.... the version that i got with the 3650 DOES run on my PC, but isn't compatible with my BF's 6260... and it does take control of the IrDA adaptor, so i can't transfer anything to the 6260 anymore. And i don't want to have to fiddle with this kind of stuff, like whenever i want to send a file to the 6260, uninstall PC Suite first... too much hassle. Now the PC Suite that comes with the 6260 (and supposedly supports 3650 as well) will install but NOT run, because it (ha ha) does not support SP2, only SP1. Stupid. Besides... half the size of mp3, lets see, 5.2 MB mp3 = 2.6 MB wav... way too big! I use ogg now, it becomes a handy 0.96 MB :) And same sound quality on the phone! It's just a matter of time untill i found the correct version of this ovcontrol.sis for the 3650........
@Sony-Ericsson
I found the correct version of Opera yesterday night, and to make ends meet, Netfront as well (both trial versions). Now, Opera always complains that it needs "2.4 MB free phone memory at least" to start, which it doesn't get (have only 2.2 MB free). Yet on the second try it always starts. Netfront starts always :) BUT... both of them won't open ANY page :...( and share this behaviour with Agile Messenger, MobileFunny (which runs on that freakin' 3650!) and another IM client that i tested (forgot name - already deleted). The reason is that seemingly my GPRS provider does not support TCP-IP.... but strangely the original "Web" application opens just about every website, only with that one i can't input passwords (hotmail!), well i can input them but seems like they're not recognised by the website - comes with "invalid password" all the time. I will have a little chat with the D-TAC customer support on saturday to see if there's a proxy or whatever that needs to be set.
Kindest regards, and thanks for all your help, guys......

Yeah it sounds like you are connecting through a proxy. I'm pretty sure opera has an option to conect through a proxy but for most other 3rd party gprs apps you'll have to get new gprs connection settings that don't use a proxy.

From what i understand the 6260 has now been recalled to nokia in the UK. There are some out there, mine being one of them, but nokia are now not showing this model on the website, neither are O2. A few things i've noticed so far, the battery life sucks, i've played with it quite a bit and made a call of about 30 secs, but the phone is now saying low batt after only 25 hours of use. I will admit that this is the first charge, but somone, PLEASE tell me the battery life improves after a charge or two!?!?
Secondly, the MP3 player in the phone bites, the realplayer one that is. The quality of the output is really low, i have some songs encoded at 192kb and they sound like they are at 48 or something. Plus there are artifacts in the playback, little squeaks and slurps every second or so. has anyone else experienced this? I thought it was the headphones but i tried the radio and that is perfect, really good quality.
answers on a postcard please......

Hi there :)
Well my BF's 6260 is overall a quite buggy phone, and Nokia's customer service here in Thailand simply sucks ass. Now, almost two months in the market and still the NCC's don't have any flashing equipment for trhis model available, sending us from branch to head office only to hear the same story there. Then the keypad disintegrates after just five weeks of use and i had to hear that the "Two Years Worldwide Extended Nokia Warranty" in fact covers NOTHING but the main board! Hello Nokia, everything alright up there??
But i have to say, three things on this 6260 are truly outstanding.
1) The display. I have personally NEVER seen a phone with such a good display, in terms of picture quality, sharpness, colours and brightness. Super, Nokia!
2) The sound, PARTICULAR mp3. Don't use the RealPlayer, instead use the ordinary player (which is NOT the Real one!) Just save the mp3's to MMC and open them from "gallery", this will open the standard media player from Nokia. If this "sucks" as well, a hint: It may be that you are using files with too high bitrate, which uses up too much CPU ressoureces. I found that there is NO AUDIBLE DIFFERENCE between a mp3 in 128 kbps and the same song in 56 kbps. So why not convert your songs taht you want to play on the phone to 56 before uploading? As a side effect, you will save more than 60% space - a 128 kbps file of 3.5 MB is only 1.2 MB if converted to 56 kbps :)
3) The battery. The 6260 shows a stamina i previously never expected from a Symbian. Both me and my BF are heavy users in terms of GPRS, games, music (!) and i even play movies on mine 3650. Mine battery hardly lasts a day - my BF three days wityhout problem. BUT the first charge already lastet quite long, so maybe you got a phone with a different bug (check file system for something like C:\system\nokia\secre~\autost~\suck_batt_quick.exe and delete it).
(That was a joke na!)
Honest, here nothing to complain about the battery. Reason for my complaints about the 6260:
-lousy built quality (misaligned display, gaps between covers, seemingly loose cover halves, keypad losing bits after just 5 weeks ordinary use)
-software with substantial bugs (bugs of the type that make the phone useless, such as software-caused losing of saved SMS (then safe them for what, if they are randomly deleted when taking off the battery???), "Web" application that corrupts and can only be fixed by flashing, phone hard-freezing when losing signal (subway!) etc....)
-Nokia's customer "Service" which is a bad joke, at least here in Thailand.
Kind regards.....

Hi Thanh!! Actually I've started a thread here regarding my new cellphone which I intend to buy in one week. I've had 3650 for one year and now I want to buy a 7610 or 6260. Many have posted some comments on it but especially I want to hear the 6260 owners comment. I would appreciate if you could kindly check that thread (last post on 11-12-2004) and let me know your opinion. Thank you so much!
