I was just wondering if there is any way to find out the firmware version BEFORE buying a phone. :-? Does the serial number on the package contain any information about it? I wanna buy a 7610 and don't want to spend an extra 30 Euro to upgrade the firmware later; As it seems the latest firmware (V4.0437.4) has some great advantages over the earlier versions!

Usually when we check the firmware version (using the *#0000# Code), a release date would be also displayed. By the way I heard that IMEI Number contains date relevant info too. If it's true, using this number we can roughly find out the release date of the firmware version. What do you think about it?

the serial is held on a data base so nokia know the date of purchase so they know whether the phone is still within it warranty period

i assume if you do buy a 7610 it will be under warrenty therefore should be free to upgrade the firmware to the latest

I bought the 7610 when the firmware v4.0421.4 was around.

Because my phone was still under the 12 mth warranty, Nokia Care upgraded my firmware to v4.0437.4 for free.

So I don't think it'll cost you another 30 euros ...
