(real problem solution here - could this thread be sticky?)

Hello

Being stunned by Nokia's ability to destroy my boyfriend's SMS that i sent him, i looked for a solution. A friend of mine in italy (i'm myself in Thailand so this is int'l teamwork) today named me an application yet he wasn't sure if it would work.

I googled for hours and finally was able to find and download the really small (TWO kilobytes!!) thingy, and install it on my boyfriend's 6260.

IT WORKS!!!!

Here is what you need to do:

Download the attachment to this thread. (To the moderators: the attached ZIP file contains "MSdriveE.sis" which is NOT a crack/copy/warez but a freeware which only is DAMN hard to find!)

Unzip the file, you will find "MSdriveE.sis". Put this on your 6260 by means of bluetooth, IrDA or directly to MMC via MMC reader device. DO NOT INSTALL JUST YET!

Make sure the file is on MMC! Do not keep it in messages inbox, move it from there using a file manager like fExplorer (freeware, google it).

Take a note of your message centre number (messaging - options - settings - text message - message centre in use) because it will be needed.

THEN install the small application from drive e, using the file manager software. Install it to MMC only!

Afterwards, in menu you will find a new application, "MSdriveE". Run it ONCE (!!!), it will seemingly do nothing and just exit after about 30 seconds. BUT........

NOW YOUR MESSAGES ARE SET TO MMC USE!!!!!! As the MMC card icon on top, when inside the "Messaging" menu, will confirm.

Now, before you can send SMS, you will need to re-input your message centre number, because it has been deleted. You will also need to tell MMS settings again which access point to use. AND all your stored messages will have seemingly disappeared - it happens only this one time and NEVER again, believe me. They are still there by the way, but in the phone memory, and can no longer be accessed.

Now, opposed to 3650 an d the like, you can NOT switch between phone and MMC memory - it is MMC only from now on. To get back to phone, you need to take the MMC out and reboot the phone without MMC. Upon entering the "Messaging" menu, it will switch to phone memory. To get back to MMC, simply run MSdriveE application again.

Kindest regards.....

your Thanh

Hey Thanh great walktrough :-D

this app works also with n-gage and other S60 device that doesn't have the option "SMS in MMC"...(probably due to the built-in player...)

Sticky?? :???:

The app is lying around for quite some time.. but nice work putting it up on the site.. it sure is hard to find.. anyway nice work on the tutorial

But let me warn you of a little bug in the app..

if you activate the app (which means your msg's will go in your MMC),

1.)and you are running any app/song/video that is stored on the MMC then your default msg drive will again become the phone memory..

2). you temporarily loose any msg stored on your phone memory (all these msg can be easily restored by removing the MMC and vieiwng the inbox) - but again as soon as you run the app again the phone memory msg will be invisible

Be warned..

Cheers

Hi there :)

Thanks for both replies. However, the mentioned bugs do ONLY apply for N-Gage!

I have been warned of this before, so i tested it. The 6260 behaves just normal when the messages memory is set to MMC with the MSdriveE, also when playing mp3 etc it is still possible to receive any kind of message (SMS, MMS, Bluetooth transfer, IR transfer) as well it is still possible to compose and send such messages.

I have heard then when MSdriveE is installed on a N-Gage, it will sort of "hide" drive E: while using the mp3 player? Well this too does NOT apply to the 6260.

I have it actually tested with my boyfriend's 6260, i am not writing just a guess here.

Yes, the stored messages in the phone's memory become invisible, but they are not deleted. In my "special" case (6260 deleted messages (ALL!!!) as soon as the phone was only turned off) it didn't matter anyway, and since most (all?) 6260 users face the same problem/bug (random deleting of messages either when turning off the phone or when taking out the battery, regardless for how long) i believe that MSdriveE is a huge relief.

Kind regards......

You mean to tell me that 6260/Ngage don't have a built-in opton to use MMC for storing SMS?? :-o :-o :-o

Nokia can do some very stupid things!!!!!!!!

Thanh
18-01-2005, 03:58 PM
Hello :)

Yeah that seems to be so. As far as i know, both N-Gage and N-Gage QD do not have that feature, mostt likely because of the fact that N-Gage games can be used (duh!) and those "MMC's" don't have the needed folders. I don't think it's because of the mp3 player.

On the 6260 it is, as confirmed by a Nokia technician here in Bangkok, a "known bug" that will be resolved in a new software version, whenever that wiull be available.

Kind regards.....

ngage/qd cant store sms in mmc, mainly because the games are in mmc (orig ones) and u gotta keep changing cards to play orig games.

unfortunately, 3230( BL-5b 760 mAh) also didn have this option to save ur sms to mmc juz like 6260(BL-4c 760 mAh),

so im wondering now is it this is the way nokia use to extend the stanby time for this two phone??

or because of the hot plug rs-mmc feature?

any 6630 owner can tell here about 6630 can save in mmc or not?

Humm.. first of all try to change the default msg memory to MMC..

>> the first time you select memory card as your default msg memory, the phone will ask you if you want to move all your msg to MMC

>> Mind you if you select no during the first time.. then phone will not ask you again to transfer

>> in case the phone does not ask you to transfer the msg to MMC ( like someone said in a prev. post) then try using an app like Msgsaver or Msgstorer to save your msg to a file on mmc and format your phone and then install the app again and import all the msg's

>> or like you said.. try copying the entire C:\System\Mail folder to the mmc using app like Fexplorer and then format.. and after formatting copy all the files back to \system\mail folder again

>> 6600 and 6630 use diff MMC i.e one is big and another one is tiny.. so no chance of using the same MMC of 6600 into 6630.. also the OS is different in both phones so i dont know for sure if the msg saved in 6600 format will work with 6630 OS

>> Best solution of all - Nokia does not give PCsuite for nothing.. Just connect to PC suite using a Bluetooth adapter and take backup of your phone.. format and transfer back.. This way all your data.. including contacts, msg and even calender data are saved..

And i suppose PCsuite has backwards compatibility.. i.e. data backed up in 6600 will work in 6630 if transferred via PC suite (there is an SDK kit available with the install of PCsuite to use this facility)

I suppose this should solve your probems.. if not.. man what the hell.. just format the phone.. you can always store new messages.. I remember i had 2000msg saved in my phone memory and did a format.. all msg lost.. but now i again have almost 1200 msg back in just 2 months.. hehe

N.B.- pls take note that when u format your phone all the phone memory is erased.. i.e all your contacts, calender data, images saved in phone memory, etc will be lost.. so remember to take backup b4 u format

Cheers

Hello :)

@jumbo22

Please remove your e-mail address - "send me" types of post are against the rules on this forum, and it would be sad if this thread would get closed because someone didn't play by the rules. I also don't want you to be banned by the moderators :)

Why don't you download the patch right in this thread? That's the reason why i have attached it to the very first post. Just right-click on the zip file, and select "save link target as .... " and it will download to your computer.

But i can not tell you if it works on the 3230 at all - just give it a try :)

Kind regards.....

could you please mail me the patch to save sms on mmc on the nokia 3230. you can mail me at **********@*****.***. thanx

Rules First.. DO NOT POST YOUR PERSONAL CONTACT INFO HERE... as simple as that.. if you want a pvt conversation then pls use the Private Message feature..

Anyway i've mailed you the attatchment..

Secondly.. the file has already been posted as an attatchment in this post.. just scroll up and download the zip file..

Regarding the 7610 compatibility.. humm i've never tried it myself.. but the program should work.. Pls bear in mind certain precautions that i've mentioned in an earlier post in this thread..

at anytime later when u want to transfer your files to 6630 just use any explorer like Fexplorer

->> copy system/mail folder from your default msg drive
->> then paste into your 6630 default msg drive..as simple as that..

this should hopefully work

Hi all. I got myself a new 6630. Did all that has been posted here to copy the messages files from \system\mail to MMC. Felt good that it was finally there, I could do it. Didnt use Fexplorer as I didnt get any option to copy file to some place else. Used Seleq instead. Anyways after all this I inserted the MMC in 6630. Seleq does not work there. And using FExplorer was useless. Now I was in a dilemma. Files were there but s/w to be used to make it happen were not helping. So I am still searching. In the meantime the next morning whn i switch ON the phone " :-o PHONE STARTUP FAILED. CONTACT THE RETAILER. Guys at Nokia were very unsupportive, didnt help a lot about warranty. Paid for help. My experience thus far. Tk care.

NOKIA DOES NOT GIVE PCSUITE FOR NOTHING!!!!

All my findings were speculated as i've only tried this copy paste system with my N-gage, 6600 and 7610.. and it worked fine with all of them.. so i assumed that it'll work fine with 6630 with OS7 or 8 ( i dont remember which one it has)

But let this be a reminder to all you peeps who want to keep all their msg safe and transfer them to their new phones..

>>>> Pls use nokia PCSUITE before attempting any type of formatting or expermenting with the phone.. this ensures that your data is just a click away to be restored ( i personally do a rar of the backup file also and save it on a diff drive just to make sure that the data is safe)

Nokia does not give PC suite free for the sake of giving it.. use it wisely and you'll be a happy camper..

>>>>> Secondly if you are a poor bitch or just lost your Bluetooth dongle 2 days ago then we have a wide variety of Msg saving applications like MsgSaver or MsgStorer available for purchase or on IRC to Download.. Just use any of these and save your msg into a file on MMC.. then install the app in your new phone and restore the msg's from the saved file

Cheers

Forgot to mention abt your problem in prev post.. well maybee the copy paste messed up with the phone's OS.. just try removing the files u pasted using a MMC reader and then again boot..

I sometimes have that problem on my N-gage game deck.. but usually i just press the MMC a bit here and there and also the SIM and then boot the phone and this trick works for me.. but then again N-gage is supposed to be a fucked up phone.. so no complains..

But give it a try.. just remove your MMC and then boot.. and if it still does not work then try removing and reinserting your SIM

If your phone works after removing the MMC then the problem is with your MMC and just format it and it should work..

But i see you have already ended up paying for getting your phone repaired.. so keep these points in mind when you face a similar problem in the future..

Just a quick note regarding the MSG saving - Did you make your MMC as the default msg drive before you copy pasted all your msg?? If not then try it this way

>> make your MMC as default msg drive
>> use any explorer and see the directory structure of MMC
>> you should now see some folder as E:\System\Mail\....
>> just overwrite everything in the mail folder with your save files
>> if this does not work then what the hell - wait for 3-4 months your inbox will be full again with msg from your firends :P

>> if this does not work then what the hell - wait for 3-4 months your inbox will be full again with msg from your firends

of all the suggestions.. the last one is the best as it involves least amount of labor. anyways i tried all that you had mentioned to get the messaged copied and the phone start up problem as well. pc suite does not allow transfering of the backup file from one phone model to another. anyways after this experience i am trying to research a lot on this. so that the lack of foresight by nokia engineers (copying of backups from one nokia phone to another) does not affect us. hope that i come up with an easier solution than instaling some s/w like msgstorer nd stuff.. and then copying and then doing this and that...

I have a question plz plz plz help me.thank u.
You know that when u want to send a file via bluetooth your file size should not be more than the phone memory (for 6260 up to 6.5) .so by this app can i send a file bigger than that.if not is there any app that can do that.
plz reply me .thank u.

Hello :)

THAT is exactly the reason for both (i believe) Nokia disabling that function - and this little application to re-enable it.

Nokia is commited to copyright protection - so if someone could send/receive things like mp3 files etc via bluetooth, it would strictly spoken be illegal. However MMC readers do the same job :)

Now the little app MSdriveE re-enables storing messages to MMC, and of course "messages" includes anything sent via bluetooth and infrared. So with that application in place, you can send files as big as you are having available space on MMC :)

Kind regards......

no one here seems to have cleared up the 6630 matter, DONT patch the 6630 it doesnt need it, just go messages-options-settings-other-memory in use-memory card if this is the first time changing it will prompt if you want to transfer messages, if you are transfering from the likes of the 6600 put your 6630 emory card in the 6600(make sure messages are on the 6600 handset and no messages are on the memory card) do the same process as about on the 6600 then take card out and put it in 6630

Hello again :)

After getting a 3230 two days ago, i found that there too messages can only be saved in the phone. So i installed the MSVdriveE there too, and it works like charm!

I even copied the complete "Mail" folder from the backup of my prvious MMC (6600) onto ther new one (3230) with the card reader and all my messages were there, nothing lost :) Better for a backup then PC Suite in my opinion......

The folder's location, if YOU want to do the same, is in /system/mail on the MMC. It might be a hidden file, so if you can't see it using the reader, make sure you have "Show hidden files and folders" activated and also uncheck "Hode protected operating system files". It can be found in "Tools"->"Folder Options"->"View" on Windows.

Kind regards....

Any suggestion?

Thanh

Hello :)

Beforwe you can send MMS, you needf to properly configure your MMS access point...... you get the required settings from your network operator.

Assumed that the access point is configured, you need to set it in the MMS settings.

Now, you say you can't do that? Whjat does the phone do if you go to Messaging -> options -> settings -> Multimedia Message?

The first item should be "Access point in use". Can you select any access point there? If not, none has been configured!

Let me know what your phone does. I am using a 3230 with MSVDriveE since quite a while and have no problems at all.

Kind regards.....

your Thanh

EDIT forgot this: If the access point is there and your phone just refuses to accept settings, reset it - from standby, type *#7370#. Your phone will reboot, which takes a little while, and during that process performs a "soft format". Based on my own experience, no settings will get lost. After it's done, try to set your MMS again. Should work now.
