View Full Version : Bluetooth problem - can't pair phones with PC!

Hello :)
Just today i got a Bluetooth-USB adaptor, brand "Billionton". I installed it, and as expected, it didn't work.
Yes, the usual problem that absolutely everyone has, WIDCOMM driver and XP-SP2.
I found on a million websites the same instructions on "how to remove SP2's generic BT driver and replace it with WIDCOMM's" and i did that. Yes it works, the BT icon in the taskbar is blue-white as it should be.
The computer is able to detect both phones in question, a 6260 (shown as "Smart Phone" and it's Bluetooth name) and a 3650 (altough smarter than the 6260, just shown as "Mobile Phone" and it's respective BT name). Also either phone can detect the computer with it's BT name.
But there it stops.
I just can't get them to pair! Both phones keep on insisting on the stupid "Pass Code for Computer" ("Computer" is exactly that, the PC) and the PC keeps on insisting on "Pin Code for <phone>". After a little while the respective phone beeps and shows "Unable to pair with Computer".
Also i can neither send files to the PC (it shows "sending data" but no reaction on the PC - the phone keeps sending for ever untill i disconnect the BT dongle) nor from PC to phone - again the phone will show up with "Pass code for Computer". regardless if i set the same code for PC and phone or whatever, it's just not happening.
Please, i believe that i have installed the dongle correctly after all because it can detect the phones etc - how can i get the pairing done?
I spent more than 5 hours flat on this issue, removing and re-installing software various times and testing settings, to no avail. I know it can be made working. Someone here knows how to?
Please help me......
Kind regards.....

r u sure ur entering the SAME passkey in both phone and PC?? Coz if it is asking for the pass key, then that means that the pairing was successful. It shud work :???:

posted via waphello :)when i try to pair (in bluetooth setup) the phone asks "passcode for computer" and the pc asks "pin". are they the same? i input a number on the phone and press "ok", then it displays "waiting for computer". then i input the same number as pin on the pc and click "initiate pairing". there will be a brief data transfer, then the phone will display "unable to pair with computer".when i try to send a file from either device to the other, the phone will ask "passcode for computer" again, but the pc wont react.this happens with both phones.please help me out...kind regards...thanh

Well that last post of me looks horrible. Posted with a java e-mail thingy that can access hotmail AND websites and does NOT quit with the "Memory low" excuse.
Ok, so when i reached back home from work i started again with this bluetooth thing. That was some 6 hours earlier. In the meantime i found out that the device DEFINITELY works, because:
- when i used the original Windows driver then i can send a file from phone to PC. Pairing the devices will NOT work, and the PC can not detect the phone.
- right now (after the 615th reinstallation of the Widcomm drivers) i am able to send files from PC to phone (3650 that is). After the last installation i had a lucky moment when, during installation (!) of the "Serial Connection" service, the phone was briefly paired automatically. I seized the opportunity (lasted only some 20 seconds) and set the PC as "authorized" on the phone. I can still not send files from the PC to the 6260 (pairing failed) or from either phone to the PC.
I believe i found what is the reason for my trouble, by reading the supplied manual. This mentiones a "balloon" that would come up as soon as a phone tries to pair, and that (the balloon itself!) has to be clicked in order to get a chance to enter the required passcode AND be able to set the device as "authorized". After reading that, i watched the bluetooth icon in the taskbar. Yup, during the pairing procedure this icon changes colours from blue-white to blue-green (connected), yet that balloon doesn't come up.
I then checked for sure that my windows has "Show balloon tips" enabled and installed the Widcomm stuff once again. Nothing changed - still that balloon won't show, therefor i get no chance to ever get the passcode into the PC. The poor phone tries to connect, correctly displaying "Waiting for Computer" while the computer lazy bastard makes the icon green, detecting that the phone wants to pair yet hiding that damn balloon and therefor disallowing me to get it paired.
Does anyone here know a way to get two phones (a 6260 and a 3650) set as "authorized", probably via their respective BT names (or what does that depend on?) by means of a registry "hack" or other means, anything but "real" pairing which just doesn't seem to be possible?
I am at the same moment also sending this question to Billionton support, but i have learned one thing: Selling devices is ONE business, taking care for customers with problems is ANOTHER. And the latter is sadly often completely ignored (yes, Psiloc STILL hasn't replied with a solution!)
I hope someone here is computer AND phone geek enough to be able to help me...... i REALLY appreciate it :)
Kindest regards.....

zzzZZZzzz Hello :)
Another 2 1/2 hour, some 10 reboots and a lot of frustration later. Got both phones PAIRED (or at least pretending to be paired) using the "install services" trick again (and eagle's eyes, quick fingers and paaaaatience) and found that the 6260 does NOT HAVE serial port service! Damn. However, now i can send files from PC to both phones.
And that's it. Still can't send anything from either phone to PC. Trying to figure out how to use the PC's internet connection to have the phones download stuff via BT from that connection instead of GPRS - read somewhere that can be done but how? Damn bluetooth is difficult. Do i need PC suite for that task? "Coz the 3650 version that i have doesn't work with 6260 and the 6260 version doesn't work with Windows XP SP2. And downloading another 50 megabytes over dialup - no thanks for now. zzzzzzzzz
kind regards............. your Thanh zzZZZZZzzzz

...just fiddle around with "advanced configuration". in local services and
client applications, make sure that file transfer and bluetooth serial port don't reguire a secure connection..... you are almost there....

Hello again :)
Well another day. Thank you for that hint, i can now create a serial connection with my 3650 (and even a balloon comes up telling me that the connection was successfull!) but to be honest, what can i do with a serial connection..? It will disconnect after roughly 30 seconds. During being connected, the small window keeps saying "Status: Connecting" but the balloon says "Success".
The phone can still not send files to the PC (the other way round works well with both phones now), it says "Sending data" and the BT icon becomes green ("connected") but i expected a balloon coming up saying that "device is sending file, accept?" or similar - nothing like that happens, the data transfer is going on (icon green, phone displaying "sending data" untill i cancel it on the phone. How to get the receiving end (PC) to actually receive the file..? In the Windows driver there was an option "receive files". And "File Transfer" offers only sending files TO the phone (shouldn't that be two-way there..?) You see i am a total newbie in terms of "Bluetooth".
Hmm any idea on how to get the following done: I have an internet connection on the PC (dialup). I wish to use that connection and browse the net on my phone, connected via BT. Yesterday i also googled the net for that and ended up with a thing called "GNUbox" supposedly being able to make my phone using PPP over BT, well it didn't work and instead disabled GPRS. Nevermind, got GPRS back working. Do i need this "mRouter" thing for that? I don't have it, only when i install PC Suite (which didn't connect via BT as well, aaaaargh). Ok secure connection then - i will try THAT again right now.
Keep you posted :)
Kindest regards.... and thanks fgor helping me! I really appreciate!

Hi again.
Late in the night, the poor workman still tries to get his #$%@!^%$ bluetooth working.
I downloaded latest PC Suite from Nokia, yup, all 22 megabytes via a 34 kb/s dialup. Can i actually clim my internet costs back from Nokia? Because..........
IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!!!
Just like the version that came on a CD with the Nokia 6260, it installs, starts even but upon trying to open the connection manager or what that's thing is called, it fires two different error messages (something media, forgot in the meantime) that it is unable to use this and that application and that i *please* re-install it. Damn crap[, did it twice, no difference, won't run. Nokia, get your damn bugs ironed out!
Installed old PC Suite from 3650 (got on a CD as well), strange even tough that is old it works flawless. Now without the secure connection thing on serial port, i can get it to connect! Yup, can backup phone, transfer images and files back and forth...... it's just insanely difficult! My Bluetooth Places -> find device in range -> open -> discover services available -> click on "Serial Connection" -> wait for it to connect -> start PC Suite -> start fiddling thru it's menus.
I want to just simply select the file on the phone with SeleQ, "send" and "bluetooth" and have the PC automatically (ok if i need to click "Ok" i accept that too) receive it and store it in "F:\\Bluetooth Files" just as it does with IrDA files.
Why oh why can't THAT work..... it would be my dream (and reason to get the bluetooth thing in first place, fed up with the breaky-shaky IrDA that's useless for large files, and always pulling out the MMC is not really good for it and the phone either).
And the second reason to get it to work? Well bluetooth internet connection sharing.... doesn't seem to work out either. Looks like yet again - $$ wasted.
Getting used to it with Nokia... *left eye peeking at clipped picture of Panasonic x700 Symbian clamshell phone, stuck to the monitor case with scotch tape, reminding me what to save money for*
Good night... i hereby officially give up...... six and more hours per day on three consecutive days and still not even 50% at target.......
Kind regards.....

....if you can pair regularly, the most stable way to connect is launching your
device from my bluetooth places, and not using quick connect. i had problems with sending from phone (3650) to pc, getting that "unable to connect" message and i did fix this by not using a secure connection, on both bluetooth
serial port and file transfer....
as for that internet sharing thing....i am working on it.... but still playing with
remote 60. getting a kick out of watching the phone, and controlling it with
a pc..
...hang on....i think billionton is an ok product....they have a forum over their
website also...

hello :)
Thank you, Tzeonn..... but the "mRouter" part is working. I have no problems with the serial stuff anymore (at least on the 3650, the 6260 doesn't even HAVE that service!). Yup just tried that GNUbox thing again, this time with already active serial connection and it DOES work, i CAN connect to the internet using my PC's dialup and bluetooth from the phone. Just Doris keeps buggering with "Connect to that connection?" for seemingly every single item on a page (even tough default connection is set), NetFront won't start when bluetooth is active (usual... "Memory Full" as always), Mango (Java thingy, sort of NetViewer clone) won't connect at all but Agile Messenger works like charm, and that alone makes it worthwile.
However it would be more important to get THAT service working for my BF's 6260 because when i'm sitting infront of the PC, well i use the PC to be online but HE could use his phone.... is there a way to get that done without mRouter (because the 6260 as mentioned doesn't offer "Serial Connection"!)
Also how to use PC Suite with it? Well.... even the new PC Suite need to connect to it somehow, or no? Or IrDA..? Anyway the new versions don't work on my PC, runtime.... whatever crap error on the 6260 CD version and the downloaded 6.41 (latest version seemingly) with it's Media whatever error.
Good night my friend... (10.45 PM, again more than 5 hours straight in front of this monitor)
regards....... your Thanh

Hello :)
Ya i am ALMOST there.... i got PC Suite to work with the 3650. That is the PC Suite for the 3650, because the newer versions *might* work with that phone but won't work with my COMPUTER. Damn. I can use every function of PC Suite now, also both sending AND receiving files.
I can as well use the PC's internet connection with that GNUbox thing, requiring a serial connection tough which works fine, i don't need to start PC Suite, just launch a serial connection via "My Bluetooth Places", the mRouter will kick in automatically.
Oh and there is a "Connection Manager" thing sitting in my taskbar, PC Suite put that there, it won't work. Clicking it comes with "An exception ocurred while trying to run "Shell32.DLL,Control_RunDLL C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\NCLTools\NclConf.cpl" Well PC Suite has always been buggy for me, don't know why. That's the only error it produces and i can live with that.
The problem with sending files from phone to PC "just so" (without PC Suite) is that there is a balloon missing. The phone pairs with the computer (automatically, since i managed to get the devices authorized with each other) and starts sending (displays "Sending Data") and the bluetooth icon goes "green", also the LED in the dongle signals data transfer. I guess at this point there is a balloon supposed to come out telling me that the phone wishes to send a file, and i should click "OK" or similar. Well that balloon or popup or whatever doesn't come. So the computer is waiting for me to accept the transfer/incoming file yet doesn't give me a chance to actually do so. This is clearly a fault within Widcomm's driver. But ok, since everything else works (fingers crossed!) i can accept that, the main purpose was anyway to get files INTO the phoes, from the PC.
BTW any idea how to get a serial connection (and internet sharing!) done with the 6260? That one doesn't offer the service "Serial Connection" in "My Bluetooth Places" and my PC Suite of course doesn't recognise it either, since it's the old 3650 version.
Kindest regards.......

Hi there :)
Just got hold of your other two mails, they were in the junk folder.
How ever, i got my Widcomm driver included in the Billionton Software, and THAT was supplied on a CD along with the dongle.
You can also download it from www.billionton.com
Kind regards.....

Lol, you've certainly got persistence. I gave up on this whole Bluetooth plus WIN XP SP2 thing a long time ago. Felt like tearing my hari out. I do it the easy way now. Download VMWARE and load WIndows 2000 Pro in a Virtual Machine and use that for all my Symbian based Data Transfer etc.. lol. Saves a lot of Hassle...
My 2 Cents...

Hi there :)
Hmm booting a second OS via a virtual machine under the original OS just to transfer files..? That is of course WAY easier than starting Desktop File Manager :)
I have an even easier approach... works almost without BT tough, but requires more hardware. Read on:
I could just send the files that i wish to transfer via an e-mail to my friend in Timbuktu. When he got electricity (happens roughly two hours per week) he can download the picture, put it on a floppy and send that via express mail to the United States Government (flights daily at 4.45 am). The U.S. Government makes sure via hard testing that there is no virus on the floppy, then saves a copy onto a CD which is send to the "ministry of unidentified affairs". There i know someone, who can pass up the messenger delievering the CD, and for a tip of 5 $ get hold of the CD. He then will poceed to a photo shop and have the pictuire printed on a postcard, which he will mail to my P.O. Box. I will receive it, and because i have a scanner that works under Linux, which runs in a sandbox under win98, which runs in a VM under XP, i can scan the picture and have it right on my Harddisk! Should i have it accidentally dleted from the phone in the months between, no problem, i can send it via bluetooth to the phone, because THAT works :) :)
Kind regards........
