View Full Version : RAM application (page-file) does it exist..?

Hello there :)
I am at it again. Tried to install OPERA back on my 3650, now that i got a BT internet connection sharing thing working. Well, it won't run.
It complains that it could not free enough memory, and has the guts to demand 2.4 MEGAbytes!! Hell how in the world should i get those..?
I have dleted whatever possible, compressed the rest and got 2.6 AMB free mem on c: but what Opera wants is RAM, and there i got only 2.1 MB free, and all running processes are system processes. No way, when i try to kill one, the phone freezes. So - how to get Opera to work?
I was thinking of an application similar to that "RAM-Page" that lives in my computers since 6 or 7 years. It's initial purpose is to dump RAM contents into the page file in the event that the amount of free RAM drops too low. It can also do such dump manually by double clicking the taskbar icon.
Well it was usefull in the days of the 486 DX4-100 and it's 48 MB of RAM. Nowadays i have 768 MB of that stuff and don't actually need RAM-Page anymore, but it's nice icon which shows the amount of free RAM is a nice enhancement to my taskbar, so it will stay on my machines for the future.
Now, i ask: Is there something similar for s60 devices, if not, is someone able to code it?? I wonder if nobody had that idea before??
We use huge (compared with the RAM available) MMC cards - why not dedicate some 4 MB of those as "page file" and have a small, auto-starting app take care that always enough "real RAM" is available for things like Opera to run? For power users (with big MMC's) it could even be increased t, say, 16 MB and the phone would become a real power machine. After all, the more RAM, the more tasks can be performed at the same time, i see the difference between my 3650 and my BF's 6260 - same CPU speed but his has roughly 3x the amount of free RAM - he can run 5-6 apps simultaneously and still has a quick responding menu, while mine can't have more than any 3 apps open - more and the "Memory Full" error comes up.
Just in case i kickstarted an idea here - can someone lend me some money to file a patent? :)
Kind regards.....

Rumours of an app like this surfaced a while after the 3650 was released, the app was called Rambooster but it was a hoax. If you ever see it for download it's either a renamed file or it'll be zipped with a password, folk have cracked the password and it's just a renamed jpg inside.

Hello :)
Thanks for replying. I have indeed never heard of "RAM Booster" nor did i read about any other such app, that's why i asked here. I just wonder how am i supposed to run Opera when i have not enough memory free, even tough everything that's running is system processes that can't be stopped..?? I had it running before!! Of course, after opening first page, it crashed with "Memory full" but at least it STARTED!
Hmm the only non-original thing running when idle is SysIconz. But that doesn't show as active process. Is it a memory hog of sorts..? I don't want to uninstall it just to test.............
Kind regards.....

Test it by installing switcher or appman to see how much memory it's using and if there are any other hidden threads running. Another way would be to boot up in safe mode when you want to use opera.
BTW there are other browsers apart from opera. Doris is great if you just want to look at stuff and Netfront isn't much different from opera.

Hello :)
Thank you for reply. I have Appman and Switcher installed, and with both of them it's the same, even when i select "show hidden processes". There are many processes running, but all of them are from the system, and trying to "kill" any one makes the phone crash or reboot.
(rebooting phone right now).....
On the freshly rebootet phone, Appman shows the following active applications (incl. "hidden" ones):
Appman 68k
EiksrvBack... 132k
Pinboard \S... 80k
Phone 284k
SysAp 68k
ScreenSave... 48k
Autolock 56k
and that's it! I am particular wondering where that "Autolock" comes from, because i do not have an automatic keylocker installed, and also there is no auto-lock function in the phone activated. However, there are a lot more PROCESSES running (incl. "ROM Processes"):

(rebooting phone again, now safe mode)
Now, in Safe Mode (it says now that there are 2.2 MB free, in normal mode that was 2.1 MB) there are still the same APPLICATIONS running..... and also all of the processes with the * symbol (system processes). Only the "WCLOCKSERVER ", "eAlarm" and "SW_FSCaller" are no more there.
Opera still won't even start.
And, yes, of course there are other browser. Just as on the PC, where i have (but never use) Internet Explorer, Netscape 7.1 (used to use, now seldom) and Firefox (now my default browser), so on the phone... beside Opera, i have Doris AND Netfront installed. Doris is inable to display frames and background images. Picture rendering is almost non-existent. Downloads from websites don't work, and it can not display WAP sites at all. Netfront is indeed not much different from Opera - it too comes up with "Memory full" after the first page is loaded. Also it won't display background images, but at least it supports frames (sort of....) and shows some of the images in small, nicely rendered form. Typing into forms (hotmail sign-in!) is a pain and rarely works, besides Hotmail does not support either Netfront or Doris, but it DOES support Opera! Hmm and the original, poor "services" application.... sort of like Netfront minus the "Memory" error, but slow as hell and won't support the "GPRS Internet" profile, which any of the other browsers NEEDS. "Services" goes only with the "GPRS WAP" profile.
On a sideline, on my boyfriend's 6260 the original "Services" REALLY kicks ass, if it is not yet again corrupted and unstartable. It displays websites just as they are supposed to be, with very nicely rendered images (yup, WITH background images!) and typing into forms is a breeze. Also supports hotmail (err, hotmail also supports THAT one) and downloads everything with no problem.
Kind regards.....

the series 60 phones like to know how many apps have u installed and what r they, and those nasty phones r using RAM for that
so with hell of an apps installed on ur 3650 u get 2,1MB RAM
when u format ur phone and all the apps r gone u will have about 3MB
so, keep it ez with the apps and install only what u really need (try not to have more than 10MB) and stay over 2,5MB of RAM
cheers

Hello :)
Ya indeed, when i got that 3650 back from being re-flashed, i had 2.7 MB of free RAM. But with a few apps installed this quickly dropped to 2.1 again.... so i gave up and bought a new phone.
Now i got a 6600 and i can run Opera and Siberian Strike 1 AND 2 at the same time AND play mp3 AND see via Memory Monitor that i still have almost 3 MB free. So heck, i am holding what i dreamed of and i believe this was the last phone i bought in my life. It simply gives me everything i ever wanted in a phone (ok if it would support CDMA and had twin-SIM to hold both my GSM and my CDMA SIM's it would be even better). But i got my beloved Sanyo, which turned out to be the most reliable phone i ever owned (yup, because it is by now THE phone that stayed with me the longest time - a staggering 1 year and 4 months already, every day in use, never failed even ONCE!) and i use it for phone calls and SMS (and still take pictures with it too, even tough the Nokia's pics are way better quality - the Sanyo's have their charm too) and everything else i do with the 6600. In fact i use it for just about everything, take video clips, record all sorts of audio, play music in ogg and mp3, watch video clips and movies, play games (addicted to the damn Siberian Strike!!), check my e-mail and surf the web, chat with friends (thanks to Agile Messenger, the single best piece of freeware i know of) and even watch TV if i want to. Of course i take photos with it too, and send MMS. Yet i never make calls with it, only to top up the credits (it's a prepaid SIM).
Kind regards.....

yep, 6600 is still the best choice for a s60 phone
