If I unlock a phone that I currently use on my Verizon plan will anything happen? I mean, will I lose service, get charged extra fees, or anything like that?

Also, I think I may be confused. I see the only benefit of unlocking a phone to be able to buy a phone that my provider doesnt offer me and take it to them to be locked to their network. Is that what this is for?

The reason I ask is, I just got Verizon and I bought the only Nokia they offered me (Nokia 6015). I found out it isnt WAP enabled, Id like to purchase a different Nokia. Now if I purchase a new phone directly from Nokia or Ebay and I unlock it can I take it to Verizon so I can use it with my service?

Thanks for all of your help.

No, if you unlock your phone nothing will happen with your plan, nothing meaning NOTHING. However, there are companies (although I donīt know about USA specifically since Iīm from Argentina), that wonīt like much the fact that the phone can be operated under other providers. But no, nothing will happen.

The process of unlocking a phone simply makes the phone capable of accept other simcards than the ones from the provider that sold you the phone. That menas that with an unlocked phone, once the contract is terminated, yo can go to other provider, i.e. Cingular, and buy just a SIM from their, with whatever the plan you want. You put the SIM on the phone, and since it has been unlocked, itīll work. No need to buy a new phone just to switch operator. In fact, you can have more than one provider at the same time if you want... I donīt know, one number while you are at work and another when you go to hang out so you have separated bills... whatever...

They usually make this (I mean, lock the phone) because their incoming comes for what you pay every month for the plan and not from the phone selling. So, they offer you a phone at a reduced price, and give to you the phone locked, just to be shure that at least for the period stated in the contract you wonīt change the operator. But when the time is over they must give the unlock codes.

For the second question, I think itīs answered in the previous paragraph.

For the last, yes, if you buy a phone, and unlock it, of course you can use with your verizon plan. In fact, in Ebay usually the phones are already unlocked since it is a great varable that improves the sales posibility, due to the fact that the phone can be operated by any provider in the world (if the frequencies of the provider and the phone are concordant of course).

Hope this answered your questions.
My best regards

Before you buy a phone

make sure it supports the network type and frequency.

as i remember from other posts here, verizon is a cdma network, and using cdma phones.
cdma is NOT gsm - you can't unlock them with codes, and the card inside looks like a simcard but it's not, and it won't work in gsm models.

you shall check these things first.
