Flight mode query on 6630

I activated flight mode on my 6630 for a long flight to the carribean so I could watch a few movies. I activated it and the network operator went off as expected and so did the signal bar. The problem is, after about 5 minutes, the phone came up with an error "no network" and then started searching for one! I was quite worried so i turned the phone off. Does anyone know if the phone is actually sending/receiving network data even when it's in flight mode?
