It all depends on the answers you get when entering the code. some of them might mean the phone has no tries left. let us know what you got

it says restriction on. what does it say when it is locked for good?

well, things are a bit unclear when it comes to 610x models since people report that message when entering correct code.
Is it a firmware/model bug? is it a nokia strategy to confuse us?
my advise is to try a SIM from a different provider to confirm its state ;)
report back, pls

I did the steps given to me by Concept9580 through PM, as I did not know how to do it. I used the 7th Code and it didn't unlock. I put in my AT&T Wireless SIM Card and it says "Phone Restricted" and says "Undo" as an option, if I choose that it asks for a "Restriction Code" ... Below are the steps given to me by Concept9580. BTW, Concept9580 thanks for your help I really appreciate it.
Yeah, i've had a couple of these work for me. You need to download Crux's Code Calculator:
LINK TO PROGRAM
extract the zip
run the the program
enter the following settings

but this phone has been causing some problems lately - looks like a new software is out or something.
Any idea on how to fix it or other suggestions? Thanks ...

I wouldn't be surprised if Cingular started using a special MNC  or even some sort of lock sequence as i heard about a Swedish(?) provider
It would be nice to have all the members in this thread to post their phone's details as firmware date and version

I acctually had a t-mobile 6101 that I was having trouble with.
At first I couldn't get it to take a code (normally I enter with no sim). But on this one when you hit that last # it just sat there.
So I tried with accept and unaccepted sims and this seemed to take the code, but it kept saying
"phone restriction on" with a stop sign.
Does this mean hard lock? Or wrong code?
I wasn't sure if somebody had already blown the five tries on this handset, but even on my 5th blown code - same message "phone restriction on"
I'm going to start posting software/firmware versions on all 6101/6102's that I get in here as well as unlock results. Plus I'd like to see what the "error" message is on "wrong code" that you are able to successfully unlock.
If Nokia or Cingular is screwing with us we're gunna find out about it!

I also tried more than 5 times and only got "Restriction On" - I tried without Sim Card - and then I put the Sim Card (Original) backin and it worked fine. I'm guessing the "5 Codes" theory is incorrect, maybe is more or maybe it's infinate. I still haven't had this phone successfully unlocked and I need it to be unlocked. If you can help, please, please, please, let me know.

when you fail more than 5 times you don't lock the phone. you just lose the chance to unlock it by codes ;)
now your only chance might be to unlock it with a pro box. If you decide to go to a repair shop for that please remember to ask the guy to read the MCC+MNC values since it would be very interesting to know if Cingular is changing params
what you could do now is to enter *#0000# to get firmware values and post here

Okay,
Guys it's official ... none of the Codes work. I went ahead and risked it. I entered all 7 Codes to see if first it would unlock with any of them and second to see if the "5 Codes" Theory was true. I found out two things ... (1) None of the Codes unlcock the Phone and (2) The "5 Codes" Theory is false - I typed in Seven Codes with no problem, put Sim Card (Original) back in and it works just fine. Any suggestions? Below are the 7 Codes I tried.
Codes Tried:
#pw+xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+1#
#pw+xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+2#
#pw+xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+3#
#pw+xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+4#
#pw+xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+5#
#pw+xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+6#
#pw+xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx+7#
- Danny
EDIT:
Mestrini, I see ... hopefully that isn't the case, if it is I'm skrewed. Where should I go to do this? Cingular Store? What do I ask?
This is what I got when I typed in "*#0000#" ...

Mr. Dannyloski, I would suggest you to gather more info before arriving to conclusions. The "5 limit theory" it's not a theory, it's true, and it has been proved. When we say "there's a five tries limit", we do mean it, and in some cases (like 6230i and BB5 phones), the limit is three tries.
The limit, of course, will not be seen until you type in a correct code. You will be able to type a thousand more codes if you want, but at the moment you type in a correct code you will not see "code error", but "cannot undo restriction".
If you have types those seven codes, unfortunately II have to say to you that unlocking via codes is not anymore possible, and the solution is in hardware unlocking.
I'd suggest you to find a small phone repair shop, since the hardware needed to unlock a phone is rather expensive for just one phone and does not justify the cost at all. A box costs between €150 and €400 (depending on model and brand). No software/cable solution will work, only a box.
Pick your local yellow pages and search for a mobile repair shop. That's the easiest way to find a place to take your phone.
Unfortunately, that's the panorama.
But, not everything is lost. If you wish to help the community, please follow Mr. mestrini's advice: ask the technician to read the MCC+MNC (he will know, it's the technical name for the network code) before unlocking. Take a note, and post it here, so we will be able to check if this is an issue about new mcc+mnc, or a serial issue.
Best regards
Edge
PS: Be careful, no codes are allowed here!

Interesting stuff
I agree totally on TMobile that possibly the MNC&MCC has been changed
However I disagree with the Cingular theory I managed to unlock a 6102 1st time
Things can change along the way. Cingular might have decided to play same game as Tmobile and after a certain version their models start using different MCC+MNC. It's not always blak and white...
That's why it's important to ask for the MCC+MNC values when doing cable unlock ;)

EdgeCrusher,
Thanks for the info and sorry for posting the codes. I dought that I'll go to a Small Mobile Repair Shop to get it unlocked via Box. I'll just stay with Cingular. If I ever get a chance then I'll go since it's only $35.00 USD over at my closest Mobile Phone Repair Shop.

If u ever go to that repair shop please don't forget to ask for the MNC+MCC values they can read from phone before unlocking it
It would be a good help for many others to come

Guys,
I decided to go to the Repair Shop, since it's right in front of my neighborhood. It's only $35.00 USD to unlock. The bad part is that the guy needs to wait for the Program to arrive, he said it'll be ready by Monday, I asked if he could get the MCC+MNC, he said he'll try to get them before he unlocks it, but wouldn't guarantee anything. I'll post back on Monday when I get my phone back from him and let you guys know.

No Problem ... Let's just hope he remembers to check it before he unlocks it, if not we're sckrewed. He was also unlocking a Motorola V3 (RAZR) for Monday.
PS. BTW, what are the current MCC+MNC for the Phone?

Well, it should be 31017
MCC=310 (USA)
MNC=17 (Cingular Pacific Bell Wireless)

Well Guys,
I have some Bad News and some Good News. The Bad News first, the Mobile Phone Repairer's Box is broken and he could not unblock the phone or check for the MCC+MNC. I'm kinda mad he didn't call me beofre to tell me, he just waited until today to tell me. Anyways, the Good News, I found another Unlocker Place right next to my house (Both are right in front of my neighborhood - I didn't even know - lol), so I'll go to that one and see what they say. It's a T-Mobile Reseller Store, but my friend got her cell unlocked there before. Oh, when she went the people there told her it was going to be $35.00, when she came back to pick up the unlocked phone they said "Sorry, we couldn't get it unlocked, we tried, but no luck ... you do not have to pay" and handed her phone back to her. She went home and tried putting the other Sim Card she had on the phone and guess what? It was unlocked. Hopefully, they make the same mistake with me ;) - get it for free ...

Strange :???: Why they kept her phone?
It takes longer to turn the PC on and to plug the phone than to unlock the phone!!! It's a matter of 15 seconds.
So be suspicious if they claim to have the phone stay over :-o Take note of all the phone's values like IMEI and battery serial ;)

and be careful with problems during communications, losing/receiving calls... thay could have also cloned the SIM... on a good machine it takes less than a day.

Does this still apply if you have SIM code locking the Sim?
Do you mean PIN I think yes... the main problem is breaking the Ki of the SIM, because it's 128 bits (on newer SIMs I've read somewhere that they are using 256 Bits) encrypted. But, On a P IV 3Ghz with 1GB RAM it takes less than a day even for the hardest pass.
As I know, when decrypting the KI you also can get the PUK... But I'm not so sure about it.
Cheers

Thanks for the info guys ... When I got my phone back from the Guy I made sure everything was still the same IMEI and Battery Serial. I will go to the Place where she went and have it unlocked. Now that I know it should only take a matter of seconds, I will tell them to please do it right there and then, if not I will not unlock with them - just to be on the safe side.
Thanks,
Danny

First of all, excellent site. One-stop shopping for info on a professional level.
I have some basic questions, I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum or not.
Firstly, What are the KI and PUK codes?
Also, I have already gotten my 6102 unlocked, but Cingular hard-wires some options out of my phone. For example, "Operator Selection" (the menu that lets me see/choose a network) works if I put in any SIM other than a Cingular one. When I'm using my own Cingular SIM, even if I'm roaming and want to be able to choose providers, it isn't possible. How difficult is it to get a firmware upgrade that would take away all of Cingular's settings and just make it the way Nokia made it?

Network Operator selection is a SIM based menu
I have not come across a phone that allow you to manually select a network whilst using a Cingular sim
Maybe if you specifically request that the sim is provisioned with the manual roam menu Cingular may do it for you?

This worked for me on the first try! Exactly the same parameters - I used the 7th code listed in the calculator. I bought my phone in Illinois and wanted to keep my AT&T gophone service instead of switching to Cingular.
I still don't understand why the phone companies would keep the same algorithms for years and for different phone models, but I am glad I found this thread, because I've been searching for hours for an accurate post on the 6102b. Thanks a bunch.

If You have entered your unlocking code without the SIM card in and you have had NO RESPONES.
Enter Your accepted SIM and put the unlock code in the HOME screen.
