Please Unlock Nokia 2600 for a newbie

I just inherited a Nokia 2600 from my daughter. Ignorant me thought I could just put in the sim card from my previous phone and chat away. :oops: No
We have have 2 different service providers. So I understand I must now unlock the 2600. I would rather fiddle with it myself. Can anyone guide me through the process and is it OK to do this.
