3310 - "Contact service" when flashing

I am trying to convert a 3310 (v.5.03) into a 3315. So i know i have to flash at least v5.57 into the 3310 first, but every time i get Contact Service.

I have tried searching for the answer on this forum and there are a few posts, but i am still unclear as to the real answer - people have suggested lots of things like correcting checksums, not using wintesla files etc.

I would like to know WHY it isnt working, not just how to make it work. Surely rolis (4.7 should be able to flash the most popular nokia model?!? Maybe i am doing something wrong?

Could someone also explain how to tell between a wintesla file and a dejan file.

    Any help much appreciated

I have provided a tutorial on how to recover from "Contact Service" in the Forum FAQ! Your phone has uncorrect checksums! This is why it will not start! You have to correct them everytime you modify a flash! In your case, you didn't modify it, but it's still wrong! Just follow the guide!

Always reply as to how you went!!!
A friend will bail you out of jail! A true friend will be in the cell with you saying " Shit, we really fucked up this time!!!"

Thank you for your help. I will try what you have suggested in your guide.

Why didnt i need to do update cs when flashing about 5 6210's and a 3330 to latest version?

Do you know if it will be possible to integrate the kill cs feature into future versions of rolis?

I'll let you know how i get on...

    IT WORKS! Thankyou!

Only now all the ringtones and high scores are gone..

Any chance of getting them back? Just the ringtones will do - i have a week before i give the phone back so i'll be busy on snake/space impact!

    Hi,

I guess U problem is specific to those newer 3315-xxx types only.

There is something special about the wintesla format there.

While converting to the Dejan format, it 'skipps' an area of 64K bytes between mcu & ppm.

Those bytes are expected to be all FF's, since the mcu & flash checks values are made with them.

But Rolis forgot them, and uses the values that is 'accidently' there.

Therefore U get the CS error.

    Hi,

    Yes, U can.

Reflash the backup, make a copy of the tones (logos?) with eg Gammu and the mbus cable.

Then flash the new 3315 mcu & ppm.

Set the faid & 3310>3315 option in kNok.

Hopefully Ur tones & logos are still there.

If not, or they start messing up the phone's behaviour and U need to do a full factory reset too, then U can reenter Ur tones again with gammu.

Always take care of Ur original backup.

Only use mcu & ppm files, avoid flashing eeprom, only if really required.

It has settings stored specific only to Ur phone.

    Good luck.

    Thank you.

I normally only flash mcu+ppm but in this case i had no option but to overwrite eeprom...

I was hoping there might be an easier way to extract the ringtones from my backup file??

    Hi,

    Sure, there are multiple ways.

Find it from flash in eeprom area with a hexeditor program.
    (apr. 001D.0000 or after)

And then put it into Ur phone with eg gammu, mbus or at commands.

    024A3A..... normally indicates the header.

Just 1 byte before that is the length of the total tone stored there, from my head.

    Good Luck.

    Ummm...

Well it plays a sound...but its not right.

I tried reading tones on a 3330 using gnokii, but it didnt work.. I tried loading a nokia ringtone from the 'examples' folder...didnt work.......I think i'll just reflash the backup and write down the tones from composer!
