Creating ringtones and downloading apps have nothing to do with your cell phone being locked onto a service provider.

You haven't mentioned what phone you have. This forum is for Nokia Symbian phones. That is Nokia phones with a Symbian Operating System installed on them. Some model nos are the 7650, 3650, NGage, Nokia Communicator Series.

If you have the above phones, other than normal ringtones, your Nokia phone can also play midi and wave files as ring tones. If you have the NGAGE, you can play MP3's as ringtones as well!

If you are thinking about creating ringtones for older phones like the Nokia DCT-3 or Nokia DCT-4 phones (like the Nokia 8310, etc) then you would be better off using software like Logomanger and such.

As for apps.. What types of apps are you trying to install. The Symbian phones use .sis files as install files (something like your setup in windows, except one file contains the whole install package) and install the software on the phone. You can also install Java applications, provided that they are Java Microedition apps. Download the jar file onto your phone and install it using the apps option in the phone.

There are a whole range of possbilities that are open to you when using your phone (provided that they are Symbian phones) and what you can do with it is only limited by the software you can't find.

It would be helpful if you would tell the forum what make your phone and then somebody can better guide you on what to do. It would also help you deliver opinions on the feature set and limitations of your phone.

    Hope that helps
