Unlocking DCT3 Phones - No cables right?

Hello. I've been reading some contradictory statements regarding unlocking of DCT3 phones, however I think I have it figured out now. It seems to me it used to be that you needed a cable but now you don't. Can someone please confirm this? Thanks.

So...

If you know the provider of your phone (which card is accepted by the phone) you can use the calculator.
If you don't know the provider your only choice is the cable sollution.
