Cell Info Display

does anyone know how to enable the Cell Info Display on nokia 6100?

I just got one from T-Mobile and when I select Cell Info Display, it wont let me select any of the options. Selecting on or off dont do jack!

Ive just unlocked the phone and managed to put in my own op logo which means the Op logo option is no longer greyed out. (Reason why its greyed out is cos no op logos had been uploaded, not as T-Mobile says, a restriction on their part)

what is "Cell Info Display" ? i have activated it in my phone but it didn't change anything.

to get information about the cell or network i use netmonitor.

cell info display gets info from nearest mast
typical info displayed is the area (std) code that you are in

Its not the fact that I want it displayed, I wanted to know why I cant select it, is there a way of removing the restriction?

i don't think it's a restriction on the phone, sounds like it's a network service that your network doesn't support.

where the info was usually displayed?

The only UK network ive ever seen support this is Vodaphone, and all you get is the area code displayed, in Australia all networks seem to support this and display the suburb name, apart from that its useless.

Hiya,
Vodafone are the only network operating in the uk that supports cell info display, which will display your area code, it makes no difference if you have it selected while using a different network,

Ok, tried it on Vodaphone and it works.
At least now I know the option is working.
Set it to On, put back my old simcard and it automatically goes back to Off.

In Thailand the Cell Info even tells you what street ur on, I was in a shopping centre called Seacon Square and my phone said 'Seacon Square' ---scary or what??

Comes in handy when your driving around (obviously the driver is not using the phone!) and trying to get somewhere but you dont know the road your on!
In England, a lot of the main streets dont always have a road sign when you join it from a side street.

What network are you using? I think that AIS (still!) does not use cell broadcast within BKK, just outside (works well in Pattaya.... strange). Orange'a cell broadcast kind of sucks, many misleads.... mine own GSM 1800 (Hello) is quite precise, but depending, being at Gaysorn it also shows "World Trade" because the phone is "glued" to the WTC base station.......
I think the best cell broadcast here is provided by D-TAC but also this doesn't work outside BKK as far as i know.
But i fully agree, it is very nice when you want to find out "roughly" where you are

Actually all UK networks except Orange support it, although only Vodafone uses it. I believe that Vodafone employs it globally to display the area code but not much else.

However, on GSM-900 networks, enabling Cell Info Display will increase battery consumption by about 800% on a Nokia 3210. It has no effect (AFAIK) on GSM-1800 networks.

Therefore, it's mostly useless.

I was hoping to use the cell info display to allow me to track mobile phones. I assume the phone knows which cell it's nearest at all times (or it can find out). I'd like to capture the Cell ID from memory and transmit it via text message elsewhere on a periodic basis. I can write the app to do this but need help determining where in memory the Cell ID number is stored. Any ideas? I'm using a Nokia 3595 as my development platform.

People are starting to use Mobile phone tracking a lot more at the moment but there are thank god restrictions on it. Apart from the area code Vodaphone and the other companies can provide a lot more information using a triangulation system with the GSM cells to work out where you are pretty accurately. The technology is improving all the time and there are now many different companies who have the facilities to find out where your phone is but because there is still a big grey area on whether you are tracking a person or property. To combat this a text gets sent to the mobile to tell the person they have been tracked. Search for the words "track mobile phone" and you will get at least 7 web sites. Have a good look at them all as some charge per track and others charge per month. One problem that does exist in rural areas . The bigger the cells the harder to get a precise track. Hope this helps

The Nokia 3595 appears to be a DCT-4 Java-enabled phone, at which point, the cell-id should be easily accessible via the Java MIDP. Check the Nokia SDK on their website, it should be pretty open info.

On the other hand, there is plenty of software out there already for those types of phones so why not simply use them?
