can the leads for a flasher be used with a datacable?
in other words are flasher leads and datacable leads the same?
by leads i mean the seperate bits they give you to connect to differnt phones

Do you mean : Is data cable compatibile with flasher cable ?
If this is what you mean, the answer is NO. You can not flash a phone with a data cable. You need a flasher cable.

Yes, the leads are the same. but, the way they are used is different.

For data transmission you need a level converter and a serial port. You are using following pins: GnD + MBUS or GnD + Tx +Rx .
For flashing you need a paralel port and some logg inverter TTL gates.You are using folloing pins : MBUS,FbusTx,FbusRx,GnD ( optional BTEMP )

i mean do the leads that fit on the flasher cable also fit on the datacable?
and will i have full functionality of both cables?

yes thats correct! The functionality is provided by the dongle, not the lead to the phone!
