Unlock codes for 8310

Hi there, I've just found this site, what an excellent place!
I have just bought an 8310 through Ebay, and have the IMEI number, and the code for the service provider that the phone is currently locked too.
However, having read lots and lots of posts regarding entering the codes to enable me to use my sim card I am still confused.
Once I have the codes (I think there will be seven), do I have to enter anything before I enter the codes?
Sorry if this is simple to everyone, but I don't want to ruin my phone! Help would be very welcome!
