Unhappy Putting a SIM card to sleep?

I've heard that putting a SIM card to "sleep" can let you make free calls. Is this true? If so how can I do it?

P.S. I keep getting alot of crap saying you CAN'T get free minutes, but if you search, you find some, but it doesn't go into detail, which a noob really needs . So if you know of anyway of getting free airtime on Tracfones on the US network, tell me.

doesnt work anymore, this rumor was circulated over here in the UK about the bt cellnet network (now O2) and allowed you to send free texts on older sim cards by preventing the internal counter from decrementing the balance held on the sim, did work, not now.

Nowadays the balance is held on the server, I had a customer in the shop where I work who's sim got damaged but the had about £70 on it in credit, t-mobile transfered the exact balance to a new sim (which he had to pay for), and he even got to keep his number.
one fine day in the middle of the night, two dead men got up to fight, back to back the faced oneandother drew thier swords and shot each other.
