nokia 6230 various probs, HELP needed please

Hi there guys,
Im new to this forum so please be nice, I have a nokia 6230 which powers up but the keypad does not light up and some of the buttons do not work even though it is a fully working keypad membrane.
the phone only vibrates also with no sounds at all, seems to be stuck on bluetooth handsfree as well?
Also there appears to be this small yellow box with a question mark inside?
Im thinking maybe just a re-flash of software, anyone seen these problems before with a cure, your help and suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks

p.s forgot to say it does not charge either, battery and charger tested and o.k.

Hi,

All the symptons you list are classic signs of a water damaged phone. You could try the water damage repair tips listed on this forum.

If the small yellow box is a sticker stuck to the phones pcb inside then this phone has already been to a Nokia for repair as this is what they put on the board to identify the fault.

Personally it sounds like parts or Eaby to me.

i agree...

the stuck in headset mode is a classic sign of liquid damage to the system connector inside the phone... and i think he means that there is a box with a ? mark in it on the screen, like in a menu or on the screensaver, this is classic signs of software faults to, i have seen 6230's like this...

Hi there guys,

the yellow box with a question mark is on the screen, phone works well other then the things mentioned, I will ask the guy I bought it off to confirm if water damage was on this phone, im sure it was not.

I think I will try the software flash as I think it might be this, receives calls in/out etc no probs.

Hi,

A software flash might repair the software problem as long as there is no damage to the flash ic's. If you have the confidence and a T6 screwdriver then it would be quite easy to tell if any liquid damage is on the phone. It will stand out on the pcb.

The 6230 and 6230i are really prone to liquid damage and i am not talking total immersion just a few drops from a spilt drink will kill the phone.

Ive got a T6 screwdriver, what would I be looking for to see if it had water damage?

Staining on the green pcb, and in your case possibly oxidization or corrosion on the pins around the connector at the bottom of the phone where you plug in the headsets and charger.

You may find liquid stains on the white keypad membrane as well.

cant see any Corrosion on these contacts and the mainboard appears to be o.k, also cant seem to get into the menu on the top button, just goes into the camera?

Hi again,
just noticed on the main board just under the lcd screen, there are 2 chips with the gold pins, the one on the left is missing, what do these do?
could this be the problem, can I get these replaced with a new part?

@Mr Jaymoss... if your referring to the spring contacts (there should be two sets... on either side of the LCD connector) then your in trouble...

if as you say, one of them is missing then your phone is pretty much unrepairable by yourself... to repair it requires an original part and specialised equipment and skills...

please clarify further!!

Hi there, thanks for getting back to me.
there should be 2 but there is just one, just under the lcd screen.
phone does still work but no keypad lights, stuck on bluetooth, keypad buttons not working (new keypad membrane fitted) no sound, receives calls etc.

what does this part do that is missing? where can I get the part, can my repair shop fix this?

ok... if its the one i think it is then its the side that has the backlight lines through it and some kaypad lines also...

replacing one of these parts is VERY difficult, i would be surprised if any repair shop would take it on...

I would say that the person you got it from isn't telling you the whole truth!

As my learned friend has advised the keypad contact would be a seriously difficult item to solder onto a board and you will need to get hold of a new one first.

Parts or Ebay!

If I can I will post a pic of the mainboard with the missing contact just to clarify this situation, do the problems im having with the phone link up with that missing part?
