7650 Locked 'Not Allowed Error' HELP PLEASE!!

Hi just found this excellent forum and wondered if anyone could help out. I recently bought my handset (7650) off eBay and I can use it on Vodafone Live UK but I am on Orange!! Vodafone have been nice enough to send me the unlock code and when I typed it in it came up with 'Not Allowed'. I guess there may be a chance that the person before me tried and maxxed out the 5 times. What exactly do I need to do to get it unlocked?
I guess I have to use a cable but which cable? and what software? will a shop do it for me if I took it down there?
