8310 network change with dct4calc

Hi all
Just downloaded dct4calc and unlocked the network on my 6100 no problem but my 8310 will only accept the #pw+ crap with a sim in the phone and says wrong code, but if I remove the sim and put in #pw+ etc upon pressing the last # the phone just stays on input mode and doesnt run the unlock sequence ie sim restriction lifted/shutdown/restart.
Any ideas?

some 8310's need the sim in for some reason

and are you using code 7 ?
