6230 Smaller .mp3 files?

Hi just got my 6230 and transfering .mp3s to it but there quite large say 6mb tunes...on my old shi*y 6600 pc suite would compress the files to a smaller size automaticly with loss of quality..

But on this 6230 it makes it the whole of the mp3 ... like 6mb on mmc..

How can I make the .mp3s smaller but not lose quality?

[cause & effect]

use sony/ sonic sound forge 6.0 or 7.0/ open the tune in sound forge and save as an mp3 it should now be about 2meg or even less.
