I have a 6230i locked to Virgin U.K. IMEI: <forgot it>
Not sure what Generation it is.
I know i only get 5 attempts at this so don't want to stuff it up. Any advice one what GEN: to select or how i work out what generation it is?

you must do it like a 6230.

If you're trying to unlock the phone by yourself then why the need to post the IMEI number? It goes against the rules. please be more carefull ok?

you need to choose "virgin Special Code" as the network
put another networks sim card in the phone before entering the code ending +1#
